Even if they do not arise, the suchness of all phenomena remains. The so-called "suchness" exists. What is this suchness? It is the nature of the eye and so forth. What is the nature of those? It is the unartificiality of the eye and so forth, not depending on other causes of arising, but rather the essence to be realized by the wisdom that is free from the darkness of ignorance. These statements refute those who do not accept the existence of ultimate truth and suchness, and they also well refute those who say that when the defilement of ignorance is removed, there is no wisdom at all. If suchness exists, who would say that it does not? If it does not exist, then for what purpose would bodhisattvas cultivate the path of perfections? They would not. If ultimate truth does not exist, then realizing it would not reach the ultimate. If it does not exist, then cultivating the path would be meaningless. Because it is for the sake of realizing suchness and bringing it to the ultimate that bodhisattvas exert hundreds of efforts. This shows that those who think that suchness is the ultimate truth, not an object of any mind, and yet still exert many efforts on the path, are showing that their faculties are very dull. As it is said in the *Ratnamegha Sutra*: "Son of good family, the ultimate truth is unborn, unceasing, indestructible, uncoming, ungoing, not to be expressed by letters, not to be described by letters, and not to be realized by elaboration. Son of good family, the ultimate truth is inexpressible, peaceful, and to be individually realized by the noble ones. Son of good family, whether the Tathagatas arise or do not arise, it is for the sake of this that bodhisattvas shave their hair and beards, wear saffron robes, and with true faith go forth from home to homelessness. Having gone forth, in order to attain that suchness, they exert themselves like their hair or clothes are on fire, and abide in an indestructible state. Son of good family, if the ultimate truth did not exist, then the pure conduct would become meaningless, and the Tathagata

All would become meaningless. Because that ultimate truth exists, bodhisattvas are called skilled in the ultimate truth. Thus, it is very clearly stated. What cannot be expressed and cannot be realized by elaboration is that, just as the ultimate truth is seen by non-conceptual wisdom, it is the meaning that sound concepts cannot take as an object, not that it cannot be realized in general. When showing the harm to the non-existence of the ultimate truth, and when showing the abandonment of its opposite, it is also said to exist, and it has also been shown to exist before. Therefore, distinguishing between non-existence and non-existence is only showing that intelligence is extremely low. In many versions of Patsab's translation, there are phrases such as "Whether it arises or does not arise, for what purpose," but in Nagtsho's translation, there are phrases such as "Even if it does not arise, the ultimate truth will not decay," which is consistent with the sutra quoted in the previous commentary, "Even if it does not arise, the nature of phenomena remains." Therefore, it is good. Here it is said: Alas, for you who do not admit that things are established by their own nature at all, and also think that there is a sudden, uncreated, and independent nature, are you saying contradictory meanings? This shows that you do not understand the meaning of the Madhyamaka treatises. The meaning here is that if the nature of the eyes, etc., is the dependent arising that can be grasped by infants, then if this itself is the nature of the eyes, etc., then since even distorted wisdom can directly realize it, celibacy will become meaningless. Because the eyes, etc., are dependent arising, this is not the nature of things, so in order to see it, celibacy becomes meaningful. As it is said, denying self-nature is denying that the eyes, etc., are the nature of things, and admitting self-nature is admitting that the denied one is the self-nature of the Dharma-nature of the eyes, etc. Therefore, there is no contradiction at all between denying the establishment of the self-nature of things and admitting the self-nature of the Dharma-nature of things. Such a Dharma
