When observing, the afflictions of attachment, etc., which conceive forms, etc., as being established by their own nature, are exhausted. The Hearers and Solitary Realizers pass into nirvana without taking rebirth, while Bodhisattvas, although they have directly seen such selflessness, nevertheless, due to compassion for others, hold onto the continuum of existence until enlightenment. Thus, both the Great and Small Vehicles are essential to the path, so the wise should thoroughly seek out selflessness as it has been explained. The third has three parts: comparing to objects such as pots and woolen cloth, comparing to objects of cause and effect, and refuting the arguments of others regarding that. The first is: in order to show that just as the imputation of the self and its aggregates are similar to the analysis of a chariot, so too is the analysis of other objects, whatever objects such as pots, woolen cloth, cliffs, armies, forests, garlands, trees, houses, small carts, inns, etc., when analyzed in the manner of a chariot, when searching for the seven aspects of their respective imputed meanings, they are not found to exist, and apart from that search, that is, without analysis, they exist only by worldly convention. Regarding small carts, some Tibetan lamas say: Shaka Tra (Tibetan: ཤ་ཀ་ཀྲ་), meaning one with wheels, is a small cart that can carry about three or four 'Jasig' (Tibetan: ཇ་སིག་, a unit of measurement), and it is also a house with wheels and an intermediate space. Likewise, for whatever other objects of such a kind, by which means beings name, that is, establish terms, it should also be understood that they exist only in unexamined convention. Why? Because the Lord of Sages has said that he does not engage in disputes with the world that are inconsistent with the world. As it is said in the Three Vows of the Jewel Heap Sutra: 'The world disputes with me, but I do not dispute with the world.' Thus, those things that the world establishes as existing in a harmless way, the Sage has also promised to accept, so one should not harm the conventions of the world. Furthermore, how do worldly people apply terms to various objects? To show that, it is said: Just as a pot has parts, and pottery, etc., are its parts.

, and the vase is virtuous. Fire has the virtue of burning, etc. Beings or individuals who are attached to pleasing objects, the basis of desire is attachment. Focusing on the pleasing objects of contaminated realms, especially craving is desire. The vase is the signified, and the bulging belly and drooping mouth, the long neck, etc., are its characteristics. Fire is what burns, and firewood is what is burned, etc., relying on the parts to establish the whole, and relying on the whole to establish the parts. Similarly, the period of mutual dependence between fire and firewood. Although these imputed meanings cannot be found when searching for the sevenfold analysis, they can still be established as existing, which is due to worldly conventions. Do not subject them to the scrutiny of reason that examines the ultimate truth. Secondly, it is said that not only are parts and so on established in dependence on each other, but also cause and effect are established in dependence on each other. Because if the cause produces the effect to be produced, then the producer is the cause. If it does not produce the effect, then production does not exist, and the effect becomes without a cause. The effect also exists because of a cause, therefore it arises from it, so cause and effect both exist in dependence on each other, not by their own nature. If you think that cause and effect are established by their own essence, then, alas! On what does the cause or effect depend to become those two? Which of the two comes into being first, the cause or the effect? Please tell me. Thus, it is unreasonable for the cause to exist first in self-establishment, because at the time of the cause, the effect, which is the object of dependence of the cause, must be established. It is also unreasonable for the effect to exist first, because it would become without a cause. Therefore, the imputation of cause and effect should also be understood as being established in mutual dependence, like a chariot, and not transformed from its own nature. Furthermore, if the cause produces the effect by its own nature, does it produce it by contacting the effect or without contacting it? If, according to your view, the cause produces the effect by contacting the effect, then at that time.
