Then, it is not possible for the self and the closely taken (aggregates) to be different in essence, so the closely taken (aggregates) themselves become the self. If this is the case, then I will arise and cease with self-nature in each moment, and there will be no connection between before and after. Moreover, the things that should be taken closely will become its close takers, so it is unreasonable. Similarly, stability, that is, permanence, is also unreasonable. If it is permanent, then the self that appeared in the previous life is the self that appears here. The aggregates of the previous life and the self of this life are different in essence, so they cannot become one self, because there is no self that is different in essence from the closely taken aggregates. The Root Wisdom Treatise says: If the aggregates are the self, there will be arising and ceasing. Here it says that this is not arising and ceasing, and establishes these two differences, which is the view of the teacher. It is said that arising and ceasing are established by self-nature. This self, the four sentences such as permanence also do not exist by self-nature. In the Root Wisdom Treatise, when the Tathagata is fully understood by the method of examining, it says: Where are the four sentences such as permanence and impermanence in the peaceful? Like this. This self is not itself, that is, the essence is one, nor is it other itself, that is, there is no self-nature. The reason for these is that the thing called self is not self-established and existent. As the sutra says: There are four inexhaustible dharmas, spoken by the protector of the world, sentient beings, space, bodhicitta, thus the Buddha and all dharmas. If these are substantial, these will be completely exhausted, these that do not exist will not be exhausted, therefore it is said that these are inexhaustible. Like this. Sentient beings are not substantial, so it is said to be inexhaustible, which is the basis here. Fifth, if the meaning of the established is sought by the seven aspects, permanence and impermanence are impossible. Which self has not seen that self-established non-existence, due to the power of ignorance, clinging to self-existence, clinging to this self as self-established with a corrupt view, these will wander in samsara. When which self is fully sought, those reasons for the self-seeking of the heretics will see that the aggregates themselves should not reasonably become the self.

That self, completely reversed in its own nature, clings to a self different in nature from the aggregates, and its own schools also mistakenly think that there is no self different in nature from the aggregates, and only acknowledge the aggregates as the self, thinking that one of the two must be acknowledged. Those who correctly explain the meaning of the scriptures realize that neither of the above two exists, and therefore attain liberation many times, that is the self. For all beings existing in humans, pretas, animals, etc., there is always a basis of focus on which the mind of strong self-grasping arises. Where is the place where this self dominates? Or some things related to the self, that is, the inner nature of the eyes, etc., which are the basis of the self, and whatever is external, wherever is the belonging of that self, there, the mind that clings to me arises, that self, in the face of unexamined fame, is produced from ignorance, not established by its own nature. Because this self is not inherently existent, however, because it is established as existent by ignorance, the yogi does not observe such a self in any way, and even if he does not observe it, the close taking of the eyes, etc., which are inherently established, will not be observed. Thus, the yogi does not observe anything that is the basis of the self and the self's, which is established by its own nature, therefore he will be liberated from samsara. The Root Wisdom Treatise says: In the inner and outer dharmas, when the self and what belongs to the self are exhausted, the close taking will also cease, and because of its cessation, birth ceases. Thus it is said. Second, again, how is it that if the self is not inherently existent, then what belongs to the self is also not inherently existent? For example, without the maker potter, there is no pottery pot as his work, therefore the self's inherent establishment, if there is no self's inherent establishment, then it is impossible to exist. Therefore, contemplate that both the self and what belongs to the self are empty of inherent existence, and if you practice its meaning, then the yogi will be liberated from samsara. Form, etc., are not inherently established.
