It is also believed that there is a self, because it is said that (the self) is the agent of the two actions, and also the enjoyer of the fruits of those two actions, happiness and suffering, and is bound in samsara and is the liberator or the one who obtains liberation at the time of nirvana. That self is also considered to be the object of knowledge of the six consciousnesses, and that self is also considered to be the basis of clinging to self, that is, the object of focus. Secondly, it is said that claiming that the person exists substantially is also unreasonable. What is the reason? Just as it is not understood, that is, it is not admitted that consciousness and form are neither the same nor different. For things that exist substantially, it is also not understood that they are neither the same nor different. Thus, if a certain self is established as substantial, then just like consciousness, for the established substantial thing, it cannot be said to be either of the two. Therefore, the previous verse has shown that for the unspeakable thing, it is impossible to exist substantially, in order to show that the person is nominally existent, so it is said. What is the reason? According to your view, the pot is not an independent substantial thing, its nature and its own parts - form, etc., are neither the same nor different, you think this is unspeakable. Similarly, this self is also a nominal existence that is neither the same nor different from the aggregates, therefore, one should not cling to the person as existing by its own nature. In this way, the two verses have clearly shown the negation of substantial existence and the establishment of nominal existence. Then, considering "that" as the basis of both sameness and otherness for things, it is attempted to negate the substantial existence of the self by negating the basis. If according to your view, the self exists substantially, then just as you think that your consciousness is not different from your own nature, the person must also not be different from his own nature, so it must be said to be the same. Also, just as you think that your consciousness is a thing different from form, etc., the person must also be said to be different in nature from the aggregates. For things, these two forms of sameness and otherness must be visible, therefore I am not substantially existent, because that is precisely the nature of things.

And because it is free from being established as one and different. The fifth (section) has four (aspects): Although the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: ātman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: I) does not exist in the seven extremes, it shows that dependent designation is like a chariot; it explains in detail the remaining two aspects that were not explained earlier; it refutes the arguments of others against such explanations; it shows that other meanings of the term are also established. The first (aspect) is: Because it is unreasonable to consider a person (Sanskrit: pudgala, Romanized Sanskrit: pudgala, Tibetan: གང་ཟག, literal Chinese meaning: person) to be substantially existent when analyzed in this way as previously stated, therefore, the basis of clinging to self, that is, the object of focus, is not a real thing, that is, it is not established by its own nature. When analyzed, the self is not other than the aggregates (Sanskrit: skandha, Romanized Sanskrit: skandha, Tibetan: ཕུང་པོ, literal Chinese meaning: heap), that is, it is not a different entity; the nature of the aggregates, whether it is a collection or a part, is not the self; the self is not the basis of the aggregates; the aggregates do not exist with the self as their basis; and the self is not inherently possessed of those aggregates. Therefore, no matter which of our own schools say "the self exists by imputation," or think that the self is not apprehended as ultimately real, do not accept the self in the manner that has been stated. What is said is: the self comes into being in dependence on the aggregates. Just as "this arises in dependence on this" is merely an establishment of conventional truth, and is accepted in order not to interrupt it, just as one does not accept arising from four things such as having no cause, in this case of the self, it is also thought to be designated in dependence on the aggregates, then, first eliminate the faulty aspects as stated above, and in order to maintain the worldly term that is merely "designated in dependence on the aggregates," it should be accepted, because it is seen that the term designated as self cannot be denied. In order to establish that the self is merely imputed, in order to clarify the meaning of what has been said, an example from outside is shown and explained: a chariot is not considered to be something different from its own parts, nor is it non-different, that is, it is not established as one, nor is it possessed of the aggregates, nor does it depend on the parts in return, nor do the parts depend on the self and exist by their own nature, nor is it merely a collection of parts and the shape of the parts, just as that is, the self and the aggregates should also be understood in the same way. The second (part) has two: the actual meaning, and transferring that reasoning to other aspects. The first
