It is said that it is for the sake of approaching the aggregates and so on. Moreover, some sutras say that happiness is attained when the mind is subdued, and some say that higher realms are attained by subduing the self, so it is said that the mind is regarded as the self, and that the one who takes the aggregates is the self, and that consciousness takes rebirth, so it is said that consciousness is regarded as the self, which is a rational argument. This teacher does not accept the alaya-consciousness, so the consciousness that takes the body is the mind-consciousness, and others who do not accept the alaya-consciousness are the same. Those who accept the alaya-consciousness say that the alaya-consciousness itself is the basis of the person. Moreover, although those systems think that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize that the person is not substantially existent, they do not think that these two consciousnesses are not substantially existent, so saying that the person is not an independent substance is from the negation of the person himself, not that the basis of the person is consciousness. Secondly, if according to the view that the five aggregates of the self-continuum are the self, then because the aggregates are many, those selves will also become many for one person. According to the view that the mind is the self, due to the differences of eye-consciousness and so on, or at each moment, due to the differences of many consciousnesses arising and ceasing, because there are many, the self will also become many. Here in the commentary, it is said that the fault of many selves is directed at the first of the first two views, or other faults are also directed at both views. This cannot be applied only to the case where it is thought that many and the essence are the same, but it is applied to the case where it is thought that the self and the aggregates are completely different and absolutely the same. Moreover, since others did not admit it in the first place, there is no fault in the essence being the same and merely being different being false, but for those who admit that the self and the aggregates are true, if the essence is the same, then it is deduced to be an indivisible one, and then the fault of many selves and the five aggregates being one is applied below it. At that time, from the teaching that only one person is born when the world is born, the other party does not admit that the self is many. The self is a substance, and because of the differences of form and other substances, past and so on, only those that become different are called aggregates, and only those are called self.

If the self (Sanskrit, Atman, 阿特曼, Self) exists as a substance, then, monks, these five are merely names, terms, and designations. Which five? Namely: past time, future time, space, nirvana, and that which is called "Pudgala." Similarly, just as by relying on the collection of parts, it is called a chariot. Similarly, by relying on the aggregates, it is called a conventional being. From this, it is not the case that the self, which is considered a substance by outsiders, is like this. Furthermore, the view of the destructible collection of views that looks at the aggregates is clinging to substance, that is, it has an object that is established as a substance. Therefore, just like the cognition of blue and yellow colors, it will not become inverted. Therefore, when abandoning the destructible view, it is not abandoned in a way that does not produce similar lineages and is not interrupted, or it is not like the cognition that only focuses on blue, yellow, etc., it is only abandoned by abandoning the desire and attachment that focuses on the destructible view. Furthermore, if one's own aggregates are the self, then according to your view, at the time of nirvana without remainder, all five aggregates are completely destroyed, which will inevitably lead to the annihilation of the self. Therefore, it will become a nihilistic view of clinging to extremes, because what you cling to as the self is precisely the extreme view of clinging to permanence and annihilation. For the moments before entering nirvana, just as the aggregates arise and cease in each moment, the self will also arise and cease separately in its own nature in each moment. Therefore, when remembering past lives, one will not cling to "my body was like this before," and similarly, one will not say "at that time I was the king, I was Lanu." Because the self at that time has perished like the body, it no longer exists, and it has been admitted that another self, different in nature from the previous self, has arisen in this life. The Root Wisdom Treatise also says: "The aggregates are not the self, because they arise and cease. How can the aggregates be the self?" and "If the aggregates are the self, then there should be arising and ceasing." If the previous and subsequent moments are different in nature, then at that time there is no self of the agent, for karma.
