Refutation of Na Chong's Answer. The first part has two points: stating the previous view and refuting that system. The first point is: Here, some of our own schools hold that since there is no self established as being different in nature from the aggregates, therefore, the view of self, i.e., the object of the view of the collection of destructibles, has two aspects, and the object within them is only the aggregates. This is because it is certain that either it is different in nature from the aggregates, or it takes the inner aggregates as the object, and the former is not permissible. Therefore, I say that the self is only its own aggregates. This view belongs to the Sthavira school, etc., that is, the school that reveres many noble ones. Among them, some who are more reverent hold that the basis of the view of self, i.e., the object, is all five of their own aggregates. And they say that this manifest clinging to self also arises from these five aggregates. As the Blessed One said: O monks, whatever ascetics or Brahmins rightly contemplate the idea of "self," they are rightly contemplating only these five aggregates of grasping. Like that. Therefore, in order to make it clear to them that your view is clinging to the collection of destructible nature, and not to the self or what belongs to the self. Therefore, the view that clings to the self and what belongs to the self is called the view of the collection of destructibles. They say this, and relying on the statement "contemplate the five aggregates of grasping," they acknowledge that the object of the view of self is the five aggregates. Some more reverent ones think that only the mind is the "self." Because, one is one's own protector, who else could be the protector? By subduing oneself well, the wise will attain higher realms. In this verse, the mind is called "self." What is this based on? Because there is no self different from the aggregates, and in other sutras it is also said to subdue the mind. Because subduing the mind is good, subduing the mind brings happiness. Therefore, the basis of clinging to "I," the mind, is called "self." In the Blaze of Reasoning, it is also said: Like this, we also nominally apply the term "self" to consciousness, because consciousness takes rebirth, so it is "self." Like the body and the
