It is essential to find the view of selflessness that prevents attachment to its object without error, and to become familiar with its meaning. It should be known that this is necessary for both the Great and Small Vehicles. If the Ratnavali says, 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. If there is self-clinging, there will be karma, and from karma, rebirth will arise.' Thus, clinging to the aggregates as real and clinging to phenomena as real are said to be the root of samsara. Here, the view of the perishable aggregate is said to be the root of samsara, and these two contradict each other. Since the roots of samsara are inconsistent, these two are unreasonable. If it is said like this, there is no fault, because according to this school's view, the two self-clingings are distinguished by their objects, but the manner of clinging is not different, because both have the aspect of clinging to things as established by their own characteristics. The two roots of samsara contradict each other, which means that the two ways of clinging to objects that are inconsistent are considered the root of samsara. Therefore, when it is pointed out that clinging to phenomena as self is the cause of the view of the perishable aggregate, this is showing that two parts of ignorance are cause and effect. When it is pointed out that both of these are the root of afflictions, it is pointing out the root of all other afflictions that are inconsistent with oneself and the manner of clinging. Moreover, this method also exists in both of these, so it is not contradictory, just as the two similar types of ignorance, earlier and later, are not contradictory as the root of samsara. The second part is divided into two: refuting that self is established by its own nature, and refuting that what belongs to self is established by its own nature. The first part is divided into six: refuting the self that is established by other schools as being different in entity from the aggregates; refuting the assertion that the aggregates themselves are the self, as established by one's own school; refuting the remaining aspects of the above two, such as the support and the supported, etc.; refuting the substantially existent person who is neither that nor this; explaining that self is merely posited dependently, with examples; revealing that such an establishment has the quality of easily abandoning clinging to extremes. The first part is divided into two: stating the former position and refuting that view. The first part is: If someone says, since you do not know what the self that is the object of the view of the perishable aggregate is, please explain it. Here, there are two parts: stating the view of the Samkhya school and stating the view of the Vaisheshika and other schools. The first part is: For the time being, it is the enjoyer, that is, the one who experiences happiness and suffering, and it is also the constant entity and the agent of various transformations.

It is not a particle, it does not have the qualities of darkness and courage, and because it is pervasive, it is inactive and is examined by the heretical Samkhya school. Among them, the Samkhyas say: The fundamental nature does not change, the seven such as the great one change in nature, the sixteen are changes, and the self is not nature and does not change. They say so. Therefore, it is nature because it can produce fruit. In what case does it produce? When the desire of the self is seen. When the desire with the form of enjoying the objects such as sound is born, the nature and the self combine, and the desire of the self is fully understood, and then the master produces sounds and so on. The way is this: from nature comes the great, from it comes pride, from it comes eleven powers and five tanmatras, which is the collection of sixteen. From the sixteen, the five elements are produced from the five tanmatras, and from the five such as sound, the five elements are produced, which is called the order. Non-transformation means that it can only produce fruit, but it does not change like the great and so on. The seven such as the great are both producers and transformers. The great and so on are also nature in relation to their own transformations, and are transformations in relation to the fundamental nature. The sixteen cognitive faculties and so on are only transformations. The self is neither a producer nor a transformer. The five senses such as the ear, blessed by the mind, take the objects such as sound that can be fully grasped by consciousness, and then the self thinks about the meaning grasped by consciousness. In this way, because one wants to enjoy the objects, one approaches to enjoy the objects, and when the attachment to the objects is small, when the self sees the objects as faults, when one is free from attachment, one gradually practices meditation, and when one obtains the divine eye through it, one looks at the master through that eye, and when he looks, the master feels ashamed like another woman.
