Therefore, a wise person should not utter any dark illusions of "unborn." When when things are not admitted to be established by their own nature, where will the absence of own nature appear in self-other generation, etc.? If some things established by their own nature exist, then generation will occur from the essence itself, or from self-other and Ishvara, etc. Since what has been generated does not perish and remains, the thought of permanence will arise; destruction will cause the thought of annihilation, etc. To show that there is no other way than this, it is said. The thoughts of grasping at extremes will occur if there is grasping at the establishment of things by their own nature. As the reason stated above, it has been completely analyzed that things cannot be established by their own nature in any way. Without grasping at the establishment of things by their own nature, these thoughts of grasping at extremes will not arise. For example, without the cause of firewood, there will be no fruit of fire. Therefore, from the habit of ascertaining the meaning of Suchness, yogis, with the Samadhi that directly realizes the noble path, see Suchness in a way that does not see the appearances of elaboration, for those who do not have the attachment to the appearance of truth in any Dharma, the habits that have been cultivated from beginningless time will cease. For example, when eye medicine is applied, the illusion of hair, etc., that originally appeared will disappear, and this will become a result for those with cataracts. But hair, etc., will not become another nature and become its object. Fourth, because ordinary people do not understand this Dharma nature as described above, they are mainly bound by the thoughts of grasping at extremes. Therefore, if one can understand this Dharma nature in this way and not discriminate in a reversed way, then the noble yogis will be liberated. Therefore, by preventing all the objects of grasping of the thoughts of grasping at extremes, wherever the thoughts are reversed, the noble ones establish it as the fruit of rational attention as stated in the Madhyamaka treatises. The wise ones say so. It is also said in the "Hundred Treatises": If things exist by their own nature, then what is the benefit of seeing emptiness? What is seen by discrimination is bondage.

That itself is what is refuted here. Thus, if phenomena exist by their own nature, that itself is their essence, so seeing it is beautiful. Seeing emptiness of inherent existence has no merit. Therefore, it is seen through conceptualization, and because it is grasped as inherently existent, it is a bondage. Therefore, its object of attachment should be refuted in this Madhyamaka treatise. So it is said. In its commentary, it is also said that conceptualization is not authentic, it is an imputation on the meaning of inherent existence. Thus, it is said to impute as authentically existent what is not authentically existent. Therefore, it does not apply to all conceptualizations, but applies to conceptualizations of grasping at truth and conceptualizations of extremes. The conceptualization of extremes also has many meanings for the word "extreme," but the extreme of freedom from extremes is only what is manifested by Madhyamaka. If there were any truly existent ultimate entity of the nature of the mind's own essence in Madhyamaka, then, because it exists, would it be permanent? Or would it be impermanent? How would such manifest clinging be transformed into an extreme? Following the thusness of reality and properly attending to it is not reasonable to say is a place of downfall. So it is said. Moreover, the object that exists as it is apprehended is not an extreme here, and the mind is also properly attending, so it is not an extreme apprehension. Therefore, the extreme here is a place of downfall, just as in the world, a cliff is said to be an extreme, and falling into it is said to be falling into an extreme. Where grasping causes the grasper to be destroyed, it is said to be falling into an extreme. There, authentic existence is not possible even conventionally, so because authentic non-existence exists conventionally. "Ultimately non-existent" is grasping at the extreme of non-existence, and refuting that which is not so is not refuting the extreme of non-existence, but if one grasps that the non-existence of what is to be refuted is authentically existent, then one falls into the extreme of non-existent things, so that refutation is also refuting the extreme of non-existence. Phenomena such as karma and its effects exist conventionally, and no valid cognition can possibly harm them. The object and subject that grasp those as non-existent or non-existent are the extreme of non-existence and its extreme apprehension. Things like saying that the Buddha has no faults are not the extreme of non-existence and its extreme apprehension. This is the extreme of non-existence of denigration.

The former "edge of non-existence" is the edge of cutting off superimposition. Therefore, apart from the aforementioned prohibitions, the objects and subjects that are grasped as existing in reality or by their own characteristics are the edge of existence and the grasping of that edge; while things like saying "Buddhas have wisdom and compassion" are not the edge of existence and the grasping of that edge. In some chapters of the scriptures, it is also said that everything that exists in reality is the edge of existence. It is precisely for this reason that the Noble One, in the Treatise on the Middle Way, made a great many rational analyses, which should be understood not to be done out of attachment to debate, wanting to overwhelm others. When rational analysis is carried out, the teaching of suchness from the Treatise on the Middle Way is done so that sentient beings can realize suchness as it is, without inversion, and thus attain liberation, in order to liberate sentient beings. If you list all the refutations of the proponents of substantiality, and they are not prohibited in the scriptures, then the undertaking of the scriptures is for the sake of debate, and how can the mere cessation of thoughts be established as a result? Although this analysis is not done for the sake of debate, nevertheless, when suchness is closely shown, other schools are inherently weak and cannot establish their own tenets, and like darkness disappearing on its own when light approaches, so we have no fault. If the establishments of other schools disappear when suchness is explained, then we have no fault. As the Hundred Treatises says: "This Dharma, the Thus-gone Ones, etc., did not speak for the sake of contention, just as fire burns firewood, this burns the enemy of other schools." It is like using fire to cook rice and boil water, although it is not for the sake of ashes and charcoal, those also come along with it. If the Dharma is closely shown because of attachment to debate, then undoubtedly one will hate the other's faulty school and will be attached to one's own reasonable school, and thus the thoughts of hatred and attachment will not cease.
