It relies on the meaning of not interrupting the terms. As the Blessed One said, "The sign of Dharma is this: This being, that arises; this arising, that is born. That is, due to ignorance, there are actions," and so on. And in the Ratnavali, it says: "This being, that arises, like long being, then short. This arising, that is born, like a lamp arising, then light." And in the Root Wisdom, it also says: "The agent depends on the action, and the action also depends on that very agent. Apart from arising in dependence, the cause of accomplishment is not seen. Likewise, know the appropriation, for the sake of clarifying action and agent. Through action and agent, know the remaining things." Only this much is said, and the four extremes of birth are not mentioned. Thus, as the Victorious Ones have spoken of birth as merely this much of conditionality, the Noble Ones have also done likewise. In particular, by accepting dependent arising as the interdependence of the agent relying on action, etc., they have distinguished the difference between the births of their own and others' systems, and it is said that this relates to the extent of the existence of things. This teacher generally considers that birth must be established, and since it does not arise from the four extremes, it will become dependent arising. To those who assert, after much effort, that if it does not arise from the four extremes, then birth is completely non-existent, and who thus speak by reversing those systems, know that this is because the thick stain of evil thoughts obscures the supreme reason for realizing emptiness, the meaning of profound dependent arising, and is a good slander of the supreme system of understanding it as the meaning of emptiness. Thus, when explaining dependent arising as merely this much of conditionality, not only are the four possibilities of arising from no cause, etc., impossible, but also the view of permanence that clings to inherent existence, the view of annihilation that makes actions unreasonable, the idea that what existed in the past also exists in later times, the momentary impermanence of each moment being inherently different before and after, and the discriminations that things and non-things are established by their own nature, and other objects of investigation, are also explained to show that these are impossible.

Therefore, it is only through this reasoning that "depending on this cause, this result arises," that one can attain the self-nature of all conventional things, and not otherwise. Therefore, one cannot examine the thoughts of self-other arising and so on. Therefore, it is precisely through this reasoning of dependent arising, the nature of conditionality, that one cuts through the entire net of evil views that see self-other arising and so on, as previously stated. Thus, the Madhyamikas, who establish mere conditionality as the meaning of dependent arising, do not accept that anything is established by its own nature. As it says in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "That which arises dependently on that, does not arise there from its own essence. That which does not arise from its own essence, how can it be called arising?" This means that what arises dependently does not arise from its own essence. If that is the case, then how can sprouts and so on be said to arise from their own essence? As it also says in the Root Verses: "Whatever is dependently arisen, that I say is emptiness. It is also a designation made in dependence, and that is the Middle Way." This means that precisely because it is dependent arising, it is praised as being devoid of inherent existence. As it also says in the Sutra: "That which arises from conditions is unborn. It has no nature of arising. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful." Thus it is said. That which arises from conditions is the reason ( हेतु ,hetu, cause). The meaning of "unborn," which is to be established, is shown by the second line, meaning that it is not born from its own nature. It is not that no distinction is made in what is to be negated, as quoted in the Clear Words on the Lankavatara: "Mahamati, considering that it is not born from its own nature, I have taught that all dharmas are unborn." This is because the Buddha himself took his own intention. Therefore, it is precisely through the king of reasoning, the reasoning of dependent arising, that this very negation of arising from its own nature was spoken by the Bhagavan, and thus they were captivated. In many treatises such as the Root Verses and the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning, the Noble Ones praised the Bhagavan through the very door of the Bhagavan's teaching of dependent arising, because it arises dependently.
