Therefore, just as initially the stories of generosity and so forth are told as a means to easily enter the nature of reality for those who have accumulated merit, similarly, for those trainees who are unable to realize the profound meaning of completion from the beginning, the Buddhas gradually lead them to realize the absence of inherent existence. For such individuals, if it is first shown that the knowable does not exist externally, then the clear realization that consciousness is established by its own nature is easily attained, as the Buddhas have said. Therefore, the non-existence of the knowable, that is, initially refuting the external, is also a method for fully realizing selflessness. The Buddhas initially only spoke of refuting the knowable externally, because if the knowable does not exist, that is, if one realizes the selflessness of external objects, then refuting consciousness, that is, the selflessness of consciousness, is easily accomplished. Those who realize the absence of inherent existence in external objects sometimes realize the absence of inherent existence in consciousness by themselves, and sometimes they realize it with only a slight indication from others. The non-existence of external objects and the existence of consciousness by its own nature are provisional meanings, as clearly stated in the Bodhicitta Commentary: "These are all only mind, Whatever the Buddha has said, Is to dispel the fear of children, That is not the true suchness." Arya Deva also clearly stated this in the Compendium of the Essence of Wisdom. Secondly, it is said that wise individuals should similarly explain other sutras of provisional meaning that do not directly show the ultimate reality in its entirety. As previously explained, understand the history of the provisional and definitive meanings of the scriptures, that is, understand their classification. Those sutras that do not explain the meaning of ultimate reality, that is, those provisional teachings that do not directly clarify dependent origination characterized by non-arising and so forth, should also be understood as provisional and guided accordingly. Therefore, in order to become a cause for entering the realization of the absence of inherent existence, it should be explained as follows. In the Praise of the Transcendent it says: "The elements are not apprehended by the eye, How can they be apprehended by the eye? When such is said about form, You have reversed the grasping of form." The sutra also says: "The meaning of impermanence...

It is said to mean non-existence. The way the former quote becomes a means of knowing is that the Blessed One said in the Abhidharma, the four elements are not the object of the eye sense, and the arising of the form aggregate that arises from it is said to be the object of the eye sense. Since both of these must be accepted, when showing their suchness, if they are established by their own nature, then it must be accepted that the elements are the object of the eye sense, or that the object form is not the object of the eye sense. When this is known, it will be understood that the previous statements were not showing their suchness, and thus newly realizing suchness, and understanding that the previous statements were spoken as a means of entering into suchness. The meaning of the second quote is that, as before, things are shown to arise and perish, and it is to be understood that this is the meaning of being without inherent existence. From which sutra should one know that the meaning of the emptiness of self-nature of persons and phenomena, that is, that which is directly expressed, is of definitive meaning? Thus, in the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: "Emptiness as taught by the Sugata, Know the distinctions of the definitive sutras. Whatever sutra teaches sentient beings, persons, individuals, Know all those teachings to be of provisional meaning." The distinction of the sutras is the difference from the sutras of provisional meaning. Teaching about persons is merely indicative, showing that agents, objects, and actions exist. This is the source for establishing sutras as two types: definitive and provisional. Again, in the same sutra, it says: "In a thousand world realms, Whatever dharmas I have spoken, The letters are different, but the meaning is one, It is not possible to proclaim them all. If one contemplates one thing, All of them will be meditated upon, All the many dharmas taught By all the Buddhas, All dharmas are without self. Whoever is skilled in the meaning, If one trains in this place, It is not difficult to find the Buddhadharma." The four lines beginning with "world" mean that no matter how many sutras are spoken, that which directly clarifies the ultimate truth directly inclines towards suchness, and even the provisional meanings that do not show it in that way also incline towards suchness through indirect means, so inclining towards the ultimate truth is of one meaning. Therefore, the world...
