In the Mahamati Sutra, the Tathagatagarbha is said to be naturally luminous, pure from beginningless time, and endowed with the thirty-two marks, existing within the bodies of all sentient beings. Just as a precious jewel is wrapped in a cloth stained with dirt, it is wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas and becomes stained. If it is said to be permanent, constant, and enduring, how is this statement of the 'Tathagatagarbha' different from the 'self' of the non-Buddhists? Someone asked this. The answer is that such a teaching is not literal, so it is different from the 'self' of the non-Buddhists. The intention behind it is that emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness are the non-self of phenomena. The purpose of saying this is to eliminate the fear that children have of non-self, and for those who are attached to the 'self' spoken of by non-Buddhists, and those who were previously accustomed to that view, in order to gradually lead them to Suchness, it is taught that there is a permanent, constant, and enduring Tathagatagarbha. Therefore, it is warned that present and future Bodhisattvas should not be attached to the 'self'. If it is understood according to the literal meaning, it is the same as being attached to the 'self' of the non-Buddhists, so one should not be attached to the literal meaning. If one is attached to the literal meaning, it will harm reality, because if one accepts it according to the literal meaning, it will become no different from the 'self' of the non-Buddhists. These reasons have already been explained in detail elsewhere, so I will not elaborate here. In the commentary, it is also quoted from the Mahamati Sutra: 'Mahamati, the characteristics of emptiness, non-arising, non-duality, and selflessness are contained within the sutras of all Buddhas.' After this quotation, it says: 'Therefore, in this way, all the sutras with such characteristics that are claimed by those who call themselves Vijnanavadins to be of definitive meaning are clearly revealed by this argument to be of provisional meaning.' The sutras with such characteristics are not the two passages from the Lankavatara Sutra that were just quoted, because neither of them has been claimed by the Vijnanavadins to be of definitive meaning, and previously the intention has been clearly explained in the commentary. 'This argument' refers to the author mentioned in the commentary when explaining the contemplation of dependent origination in the Dasabhumika Sutra.

It is extremely unreasonable to explain about prohibition. Prohibiting other authors, such as the "mind-only" mentioned in the Daśabhūmika Sūtra (Ten Stages Sutra), the word "only" indicates that it is a knowledge that does not prohibit external objects, not a knowledge that shows the prohibition of external objects as the definitive meaning. Therefore, how can this scripture clearly explain the definitive meaning at its root? Among the three scriptures, the mind-only that shows the prohibition of external objects as the definitive meaning is like the four lines beginning with "How is one sick?" Showing the ālaya-vijñāna as the definitive meaning is the scripture that shows the essence of permanence as the definitive meaning. If showing the existence of the essence of permanence is the definitive meaning, then how can the ālaya-vijñāna be established as the definitive meaning? In the Ghanavyūha Sūtra (Dense Array Sutra), it says: "The various grounds are the ālaya, the Sugata-garbha is also that. The Tathāgatas show the essence with the name of ālaya. The essence is also proclaimed as the ālaya, other wise ones do not know this." Also, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra (Descent to Lanka Sutra), it says: "The Tathāgata-garbha ālaya-vijñāna is proclaimed as the ālaya-vijñāna, together with the seven vijñānas." These two are repeatedly said to be different names. Although one of these two is said to be permanent and the other is said to be impermanent, therefore it is not showing two things in their literal sense as one, but considering with what thought the essence is shown, and considering the meaning of showing the ālaya-vijñāna, therefore, from the meaning of the thought, they are different names, so the meaning is the same. In this way, since the former shows the definitive meaning, the latter also becomes the definitive meaning. In the commentary, it says: "Because it follows the nature of all things, it should be understood that only emptiness is shown with the name of ālaya-vijñāna." It says this. It is necessary to properly arrange this and the two that show the essence of permanence etc. as the definitive meaning, so that one must understand that the scripture shows the ālaya-vijñāna as the definitive meaning. From "Great wisdom emptiness" to the end of "comprehend this," in the sūtra itself it says: "In whichever sūtra section it may be, one should comprehend the meaning of this in them." This refers to distinguishing the difference between the existence and non-existence of the first two natures by their own characteristics, which is a scripture that shows the definitive meaning. Second, now in order to clearly explain that the mind-only spoken of by reasoning is the definitive meaning, an explanation is given.
