The ground is established as the sole entity without a maker or feeler, and in explaining the meaning of mind-only, it is said that the twelve branches rely on a single mind. Therefore, the word "only" in this sutra does not negate meaning, but rather negates a maker other than the mind. The first view here comes from the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle*. Therein, the scripture is what the Blessed One said in the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*: "For example, these three realms are mind-only." This is the scripture cited in inferring mind-only. In the self-commentary of the *Twenty Verses*, that scripture is also cited, and it is thought that "mind" refers to that which is together with its concomitants, and the use of "only" is explained as negating meaning. To negate in this way, it was previously done by Lekden, and then by Chandrakirti as well. The second view is that the word "only" in mind-only negates other makers, which is said to be the meaning of the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*. In order to explain that other sutras also elucidate this meaning, it is said that because the word "only" negating other makers is the meaning of the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*, in order to increase the wisdom of the wise who are able to realize this very truth, from the *Lankavatara Sutra*, the Omniscient One, in order to cut off the meaning of mind-only spoken of in other sutras, spoke this vajra of the nature of speech that destroys the high mountain of the evil view of the tirthikas who believe in the self and Ishvara, etc., as the makers of the world. The vajra is: "Sentient beings, continuity, and aggregates, Likewise, conditions and particles, Nature, Ishvara, and makers, I say are only of the nature of mind." As the *Lankavatara* says, to those who claim sentient beings and even Ishvara as the maker, I say that they are not the makers, but only the mind is the maker. In order to clarify the meaning of this sutra, just as the tenets established by their respective treatises, the tirthikas consider sentient beings, etc., continuity and aggregates, etc., as the maker, but the Victorious One did not see them as the maker, but said that only the mind is the maker of the world. The root verse says "tirthikas" is thought of as the majority, because even among Buddhists, there are those who consider sentient beings and continuity, etc.

It is merely established as the agent. Or, those who conceive of persons, etc., as agents are not Buddhists either, because, like non-Buddhists, they have not truly understood the real meaning of the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, the word "non-Buddhist" means pervasive. In the "Ratnavali" it also says: "If someone says that a person is aggregates, the Samkhyas, owls, naked ones, etc., if there is a dispute, ask them to speak of what is beyond existence and non-existence. Therefore, the Buddhas have declared that the teachings are beyond death, existence, and non-existence, and that the profound is the treasury of the Dharma. Know that this is the supreme treasury of Dharma." It means that if someone says that persons and aggregates are truly existent, then ask them if they can speak of the principle of being free from the extremes of existence and non-existence. They will not be able to explain its meaning. Therefore, the meaning of the teachings is to be free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, which is the treasury of the supreme Dharma, which is not found in other schools. Know this. Since samsara has no beginning, what kind of evil thoughts have not arisen in the past? And what kind of evil thoughts will not arise in the future? Just as now, among white ascetics, etc., it appears that they regard the aggregates, etc., as truly existent and proclaim them as agents. In some versions, there are also mentions of "white monkeys," etc., while in the translation of the commentary, there are mentions of "gray-robed monks," etc., which refers to the naked monks. Ascetics are the names of meditators, so white meditators refer to someone in their own sect who proclaims that the aggregates are truly existent agents. Third, since this is the case, for the time being, it is prevented that the agent is something other than the mind, because the meaning of the word "only" has been completed, so someone says that the word "only" cannot prevent the object of knowledge that is external. In order to show that it is impossible to prevent the external from another way of speaking that takes the mind as the main thing, it is said: Just as when someone with vast wisdom is called a Buddha, the previous word "Buddha" is not obvious, but there is still the term "Buddha," so among the two, form and mind, when only the mind is the main thing, the latter word "main" is not obvious, but in the sutra it says that the world...
