It is said that difference itself is the object of expression of sound. The generalities of sound and meaning that appear in conception are terms that have been labeled with names and signs. The refutation of this is: Are these meanings related to the speaker and the listener, that is, are they attached to their continuum? Or do they exist solely on the surface of external things? Or is it an object that is unrelated to these three? If according to the first case, then the sound "bottle" should not refer to the external bottle, because it does not express it. Because it expresses the part that is attached to external things, the assertion that sound expresses the self-character is also well refuted. If this is the case, then do those who teach and listen use terms by clinging to the external bottle and its name and sign as one? Are the external bottle and its name and sign clung to as one after becoming one with the object? Or are names and signs attached to the object and then clung to as one? Or are names and signs attached to the external bottle and then clung to as one? Or are both made the basis of imputation and the imputed property and then clung to as one? If according to the first case, then since the external bottle, which has become the object of sensory manifestation, is undeniably seen, it will not become one with the name and sign that are included by non-associated formations. When looking at the external bottle, the collection of senses such as the eye should not be associated with the result, because it is understood as it is only from the expressing sound. If it is admitted that names etc. are the objects of expression of self-characteristics, then the situation will also become bad, for the same reason as before. If according to the second case, then the senses such as the eye will also fall into the fault of being meaningless, because it is understood as it is only from the expressing sound, without being confused with other things. If according to the third case, just as when a person with equal power to the king is given the title "king", therefore the mind that understands it does not understand the king, so relying on the sound "bottle" should not refer to the thing bottle, because the consciousness that produces the sound of bottle does not understand the bottle. Just as relying on calling a stupid person "cow", therefore the mind that understands the stupid person does not understand the cow. Name and

The sound-born consciousness that clings to oneness through the way of establishing external vases as imputed dharmas, based on name and characteristic as the basis of imputation, does not understand the external vase, which understands name and characteristic, as the main subject of expression. According to the fourth chapter, the sense faculties such as the eyes would become meaningless, and there would be the fault that sound does not lead to meaning. If it is said that name and characteristic are self-characterized, and external things are also self-characterized, and because they are the same, they are mistaken for one, and thus follow the meaning, then it is unreasonable. Even if one mistakenly follows the meaning at some time, it is unreasonable for sound to lead to meaning at all times, because sometimes one must also follow name and characteristic. For example, like twin brothers. Just as two similar things that are determined in their respective realms, even if one is spoken of, it will not lead to the understanding of the other. Therefore, it is not reasonable to mistakenly follow the realm, because name and characteristic belong only to the lineage of teaching and listening. To consider the appearance of sound-born consciousness as the subject of expression, the fault of not following the meaning is not the same, because the nature of conceptual thought is mistaken, appearing as if grasping things, and because of its own appearance, it clings to it as meaning, and thus follows. The other root texts and commentaries are only for understanding. In dreams, the mind consciousness has two types, conceptual and non-conceptual. For conceptual thought, it is acknowledged that sound and meaning are the objects of grasping, and that the aspect of grasping becomes the nature of consciousness, which is the same as in the waking state. For non-conceptual thought, the clear appearance of blue, etc., is like the appearance of falling hair in the waking state, like the hair appearing to the sense consciousness. The clear appearance of blue is the nature of consciousness, and it is also like the clear appearance of hair. The body in a dream, which appears as if it is separately cut off, is not established separately in accordance with things, because the body resting in bed would not have breathing, and would therefore die, and if it were stabbed with a knife and killed, the path of killing would not be completed. This is pervasive, because it is impossible for one person to have two different streams of consciousness at the same time. Furthermore, if asked why it is believed that the non-erroneous eye consciousness has the object of grasping, the answer is that from the result, the aspect of turning consciousness is taken as the object of grasping.
