Because the clarity of knowing those reasons gathers in one place, thereby, by relying on each sense organ, one knows the reason for applying sound. All four types of direct perception apply the sound of direct perception. Because of the meaning of 'going,' a cow is called a cow; although one knows the reason for applying the sound of 'cow' through the activity of going, the sound of 'cow' is not applied to a lump that does not go. After holding the sign and remembering the connection, inferring what is to be proven is inference. The word 'and' is a conjunctive word to show that both valid cognitions have equal strength. 'Thus it is said' means that there are only these two valid cognitions. And, for something whose meaning has already been understood, if it is a numerical word, then it is a completing word. Fifth, merely grasping the suchness of things, and taking what has already been grasped as the meaning of valid cognition, then inference will not become valid cognition. If obtaining an ungrasped meaning is valid cognition, then mistaking a mirage for water will also become valid cognition. To dispel such doubts, the general definition of valid cognition is explained: 'These,' and so on. In the general definition of valid cognition, the two aspects of non-deception and clarifying the unknown are explained, and what is explained here does not show three different aspects of meaning reversal, but the former two are also included in this. The great translator said that the word 'when entering' cuts off what is impossible, thereby implying that what is not pervasive is cut off. Through the two negations of 'not deceiving' and 'not changing,' it is understood as 'not deceiving.' The very act of not deceiving is valid cognition, and that is the very act of obtaining. What is the reason for not deceiving? Fire, which is able to accomplish the function of cooking, etc., is the object of non-deception, and that is what is obtained. Merely grasping an object is not valid cognition, because even if direct perception does not grasp the moment, it is not its accomplisher, nor is it its obtainer, nor is it the means of obtaining it. Even if the object is not taken as the meaning of grasping, inference can still obtain the meaning. The direct perception that has the nature of obtaining meaning, that has the appearance of being able to act, is something that is examined incidentally in the treatise, not the main thing that needs to be determined. The meaning obtained by direct perception

It is not the realm of action, because the indivisible moment appears. What is apprehended by inference is also not real, and the object of attachment is also a fabrication, so what function can be achieved? It is said that the object of entry is obtained, so it is said to be infallible in that. If what is not apprehended is the object of entry, it would be too extreme to be a valid cognition, like grasping water in a mirage. Therefore, it is said, "After thoroughly examining the meaning," because entering depends on the decision, so certainty and entry are shown as cause and effect. The complete decision-maker is the entry, and the meaning of the decision is the object of entry, so there is no fault. The first decision-maker causes the person to enter, so there is no valid cognition for the meaning that has already been realized. Therefore, the first moment of direct perception and the first moment of inference are valid cognitions, but the subsequent similar types of establishment and bliss that are not different from that and the object of action are decisive cognitions, not valid cognitions. Valid cognition is only that which has not been realized. Therefore, in order to understand that the first entry is a valid cognition, the correct knowledge that causes entry is said to be the basis of the distinction between the two valid cognitions. Here, is the establishment of non-deception as the general characteristic of valid cognition done from the perspective of the commonality of meaning and mind, or only from the perspective of the meaning proponent? It is done from the perspective of commonality. If so, then the determination of the number of two, direct perception and inference, cannot be established, because the establishment of non-conceptual and non-deceptive as the meaning of direct perception is only from the perspective of the Sutra school. There is no fault, because the determination of valid cognition into two, direct perception and inference, is common, but there is no contradiction in the separate determination of the meaning of direct perception, because the Yogacara school accepts knowledge that is free from conceptuality and newly non-deceptive as the meaning of direct perception. Therefore, even if it is only entering into the object, the subsequent similar types of direct perception and inference that are included in decisive knowledge are not valid cognitions. In order to understand that the first entry is a valid cognition without depending on others, the correct knowledge that causes entry is established as the basis of distinction, not to show that if it is a valid cognition, it is not necessarily the first entry. When showing the general characteristic of valid cognition, it is not deceptive in the function of meaning.
