What is to be eliminated is inference itself, because there is nothing other than conceptualization and error that become valid cognition. Therefore, in establishing valid cognition, if we consider it from the perspective of eliminating dissimilar classes, each individually can establish it. However, two are mentioned in order to eliminate wrong conceptualizations. For example, it is to refute some who consider knowledge impaired by eye disease (yellow eye disease) as direct perception, and some who consider some direct perceptions as conceptualizations, so two are mentioned. In general, these have four points, namely the sound of subsequent statement and the determination of establishment, up to "this very method is reasoning." And the way to go to the definition of eliminating dissimilar classes and wrong conceptualizations is from "here also" to "all abandoned." So, is there a word here that indicates the meaning to be expressed? It is not necessary to actually state it, because the meaning to be expressed is easily understood simply by elaborately determining the definition of non-conceptual and non-erroneous. Even if it needs to be stated, it is not that it is not stated, because in the external commentary of this, it is indicated by "any cognition is direct perception." If either the name or the meaning to be expressed is actually stated, it is not necessary to actually state both, because in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, even if the meaning to be expressed is actually stated, the definition must be implied through general, specific, and other ways. Therefore, after determining the general definition of valid cognition and the two numbers of direct perception and inference, it is not enough to establish the definition of direct perception valid cognition merely through non-conceptual and non-erroneous. For the object to be eliminated by direct perception valid cognition, the latter of the two types of valid and invalid cognition has already been eliminated by establishing non-deception. And for valid cognition that is not direct perception, which is determined to be inference, by saying non-conceptual, inference is also eliminated, so that direct perception valid cognition can be expressed. Similarly, this can also be done through non-erroneous, so each individually can eliminate dissimilar classes. If it is thought that non-conceptual can do this, then why is it necessary to say non-erroneous? This is said in order to eliminate wrong conceptualizations. If it is thought that the latter can do this, then the former is not necessary, but it is also said in order to eliminate wrong conceptualizations. Therefore, when any one part eliminates dissimilar classes, the other part is used to eliminate wrong conceptualizations, so both are like that, so saying both together is to eliminate wrong conceptualizations.

It is to eliminate doubts. If it is said to be non-deceptive, then it should be known that the consciousness of the eye damaged by jaundice is not direct perception because it is deceived by the object it apprehends. Since it does not rely on the reason with three characteristics, it is not inference, and since it does not deceive in terms of appearance or attachment, it is established that it is not another valid cognition either. If non-deceptive is not mentioned, some people cling to such consciousness as conceptual and thus establish it as not being direct valid cognition, and some people cling to merely not deceiving in terms of meaning and being non-conceptual, thus establishing it as direct valid cognition. In order to dispel those wrong conceptions, non-deceptive is mentioned. The third question is, is this definition aimed at both the Sutra school and the Mind-Only school? Or is it aimed only at the Sutra school? To dispel such doubts, it is said, "Others," etc. Some, like the Sutra school, also consider the definition of direct perception in the Mind-Only school to be common, so they consider the meaning of non-deceptive to be non-deceiving. Acharya Śāntarakṣita also thinks so. To refute this, it is to argue that the meaning of the word non-deceptive is non-deceptive with respect to the object apprehended, and to refute the view that it is non-deceiving. The first point is, for what reason? Acharya does not think of the meaning of non-deceptive in that way, because the opposite of that, deception, its definition is appearing in a reversed way, because it is said there and here that it is deceived by appearance. Moreover, conceptualization is also direct perception, because it is the consciousness in which the self-characteristic of things does not appear. When saying this, if it is direct perception, then it appears in accordance with how things exist, and it is able to function for the object apprehended, because it is said that it is not deceived in this respect. And it is also repeatedly said that inference is not that, and clinging to that is deception. If it is not considered that direct perception is the opposite of this, then there is no need to show that only inference is deception. If it is considered, then that refers to being deceived by the object apprehended, not being deceived by the object of attachment, and since the way of deception is the opposite of this, direct perception is non-deceptive, therefore it is established that direct perception is non-deceptive with respect to the object apprehended. The second point is, Because it has already been established above that direct perception is correct consciousness, if the meaning of non-deceptive is understood as non-deceiving, then the definition of direct valid cognition will become correctly knowing, being separated from conceptual thought and non-deceiving, therefore understanding the meaning of non-deceptive as that is meaningless. The Mind-Only school's
