Through unerring great wisdom, merely seeing with direct perception, one can generate certainty about all things, and also cause things to arise with wisdom, thereby understanding all their own states. Some of our own schools consider destruction to be impermanence, even so, because of the reason that one previously saw with direct perception, but later could not see, through inference one can understand that color is impermanent, therefore there is no fault of clinging to the self-general mixed up with the measure becoming three natures. Thinking that destruction should not be impermanence, therefore rationalists think that mere existence is not impermanence, because the sky and so on should also become impermanent. Therefore, if it is said that existence in the middle of being determined as two extremes, and the establishment of a connection of agreement and union with that existence, that itself is the meaning of the word called impermanence. If asked what those two extremes are, the answer is that there are two: the previously non-existent and the later non-existent. If asked why those two non-existents are not impermanent, the answer is that those two are non-entities, therefore the saying "the impermanence of entities," and the saying "entities have impermanence," and the saying "entities are impermanent," because the sixth case, the seventh case, and the law and the possessor of the law, etc., are unreasonable. If you say so, then "the previous non-existence of entities" and so on are also unreasonable, because there is no connection with entities. Because if combined with entities, it is admitted that any of the sixth case and so on are unreasonable. If it is said that existence itself is a single permanent general characteristic, then the gathering that agrees with it is also permanent, therefore it is not reasonable to distinguish it with two extremes. If it is said that the two causes and effects are the extremes, then the distinguishing dharma, the cause and effect, will also not exist, because there is no connection between the previously non-existent and the entity. Because rationalists do not admit that entities were previously non-existent. The impermanence spoken of by distinguishing between the two causes and effects is also not established, because there is no distinguishing dharma. If it is said that the cause is not admitted to be the newly produced fruit of the previously non-existent, but rather that which connects the already established sprout with existence itself, then the same harm as before will occur to this, therefore it must be admitted that there is no fruit, and that the entity is completely permanent. Eliminating the misconceptions about the definition of direct perception, first in the commentary on the Theory of Valid Cognition, the master Dharmakirti

In short, the so-called "direct perception" refers to the subsequent statement of the basis. What can be explained by direct perception is the extremely famous knowledge that makes direct perception manifest, which is free from conceptualization and is unerring. In this way, after subsequently stating direct perception, in order to establish the characteristics of being free from conceptualization, etc., the statement that the meaning of the established basis is stated again is called the subsequent statement of the basis or the signified. Since the characteristics—being free from conceptualization and unerring—are for the purpose of establishing what was not previously established, it is called the statement of establishing characteristics. Regarding this point, it is unreasonable to mention in passing that the master Dharmottara's establishment of his own school is unreasonable, the refutation of other schools is unreasonable, and the arguments of the early Tibetans who established the master Dharmottara's school as reasonable do not seem correct. Therefore, the great translator's view is the definitive view in the scriptures, and the conclusion of extensive refutation of this should be consulted in the "Great Commentary" written by the great master Grolungpa. Regarding one's own school, the view of the master Dharmottara is without error. Neither of the two ways of establishing the master Dharmottara's school as reasonable or unreasonable has well understood the former's view, that is, in the establishment, the name is taken as the signified, and it is considered the subsequent statement of the signified and the establishment of characteristics, but the master Dharmottara does not think that the established is certain when the establisher is uncertain. And that would become not the established. Therefore, here, the established of the knowledge that is free from conceptualization and unerring is direct perception. Here, since the practitioners, etc., make things manifest, although the meaning of the word "direct perception" is determined, since they falsely impute conceptualization, it is very clear that it is to establish the previously unestablished being free from conceptualization and unerring. Therefore, the meaning of the subsequent statement is that, since it makes things manifest, it is called "direct perception." For the basis, there are root consciousnesses that grasp form, etc., and its own self-reflexivity, and even in the case where the knowledge of being free from conceptualization and unerring is not established, these meanings can be determined, because these meanings have been established by direct perception. Therefore, the master Dharmottara
