If something has an indestructible nature, then other subsequent causes cannot destroy it. If it exists as something destructible, then admitting destruction as something other has no result whatsoever, as has already been explained in the second chapter. If one considers destruction to be impermanence, then things and objects cannot be said to be the same or different. Because there is no thing, it is impermanence conventionally imputed by conceptualization, but not established ultimately. If one also acts according to the authority of what appears to conceptualization, if there is even a little bit existing as a thing, then from its own characteristic, that thing could be established as either the same or different. But that is not the case, because it has already been explained that there is no thing. The impermanence of color, because it is spoken of from the perspective of dharma and the possessor of dharma, is another thing. If it is said that dharma and the possessor of dharma are merely imputed by conceptualization and are not things, for example, when saying that sound is impermanent, dharma is not another thing, because the sound of dharma shows something that is not different from the possessor of dharma. When saying it like that, the possessor of dharma is not dharma, and if so, then the word of dharma would also entail other dharmas. Therefore, at that time, dharma and the possessor of dharma are not multiple things, that is, not different, but rather it is said that the difference is produced by conceptualization, that is, imputed. That one possessor of dharma appears as various different dharmas is following the appearance of conceptualization, but it is not established that way from the perspective of its own nature. Therefore, when the basis of the general, the last moment of color, is directly apprehended and established, then the impermanence of the general itself is also apprehended and established. For example, in the case of connecting similar colors later, if the impermanence of color is not directly apprehended, that is, not established, then inference is applied in order to establish and understand it. If all parts of color are directly apprehended, then it must be established, so applying inference is meaningless. If one asks, the ease of establishment only grasps one aspect of the nature of one thing, but not all aspects. Even so, because of the interruption of confusion, it is not certain, so it is not a valid cognition for all parts. Even if there is no difference in experience, but being accustomed to one whole

Because one does not see the various ways in which certainty arises due to factors such as distance and proximity. That fault applies to those who consider direct perception to be definitive cognition; if that were the case, one would have to accept that everything seen is definitive. For us, there is no fault whatsoever in employing inference to sever the superimposition on what is apprehended as uncertain. The reason why color is sometimes not known to be impermanent is that, just as one mistakes different things for the same, it is because one is seized by the cause of confusion of mistaking earlier and later for the same. That is also because there is an internal cause of confusion—another consciousness—and an external cause of confusion—the existence of other similar things arising without interruption. The latter reason is that even if the earlier and later moments are taken to be different, they are not seen separately. The reason why similar other things are needed as a cause for mistaking things as permanent is that even a child who sees the last moment of a candle by direct perception, without the connection of similar moments, can completely determine impermanence. Among the four seals of Dharma, the reason why the reasoning for establishing conditioned phenomena as momentary is extremely superior and extensively determined from beginning to end, even more so than in other treatises, is that in order to realize that all contaminated phenomena are suffering, this realization must precede. If that is realized, then there is a need to realize the excellence of the selflessness of aggregates and the peace of nirvana, and so on. An example of something apprehended by direct perception but not certain is: "The capacity is in the nature of the thing." and so on. If the capacity of a seed to produce a sprout is not in the nature of the seed, then the relationship between the sprout and cause and effect would not be established. Merely assisting the capacity of the seed to produce a sprout would also not establish cause and effect, for if that were the case, one would have to realize infinite capacities, and therefore the fundamental continuum itself would not be established. If one accepts that the single final capacity is the nature of the capacity to help the sprout, then it is the same for the seed, and therefore the nature of the capacity is established. The reason why capacity is apprehended but does not lead to direct perception of certainty is that because the result does not arise immediately, it is overwhelmed by ignorance, and there is no clear seeing that can lead to definitive cognition. Therefore, inference is employed to counteract that ignorance.
