Because it is the cause of the ground, inference is not deceptive in what is to be established, but even if it arises from its own character, like the wrong view of grasping sound as permanent, it is not non-deceptive. In this regard, the great translator narrates how the debate arose in the commentary of Master Dharmottara, and examines whether it is reasonable or not, as well as the great translator's own system, and examines whether his accusations of faults against Master Dharmottara are appropriate or not. The first point is that some of the outsiders called "Sukha-kara" thought that Master Dharmakirti had shown through this treatise that the mind that grasps the sign is not deceptive, and therefore they stated two faults: unreasonableness and inappropriateness. The first point is: is the grasping of the sign non-deceptive to the sign or non-deceptive to the sign-possessor? If it is the former, is it direct perception or inference? If it is the former, then it contradicts emptiness of appearance. If it is the latter, then proving that inference is non-deceptive is because it transcends the sign-possessor itself. The second point is: it is appropriate to show that inference, even if it is mistaken, is non-deceptive, but it is inappropriate to prove that grasping the sign is non-deceptive. Furthermore, it is reasonable that it is non-deceptive according to how the meaning is grasped and how it is adhered to, but even if the grasping of the sign grasps and adheres to the sign, it does not make the sign-possessor the object, therefore it is unreasonable for it to be non-deceptive, they say. The second point is: the mind that grasps the sign does not only make the sign the object, but also measures the relationship between the sign and the property to be established, therefore it is not deceptive even to the impermanence of the object of relationship. Therefore, there is no fault as previously stated, and there is also no fault of inappropriateness, because in order to prove that the inference of the sign-possessor is non-deceptive, it depends on it being related to the mind that grasps the sign, it is related to the sign, and its separation from the property to be established is certain. The third point is: the translator says that Dharmottara's view is unreasonable, because if the grasping of the sign is direct perception, then it contradicts emptiness of appearance, and if it is inference, then it is the sign-possessor itself, therefore it is meaningless to state it separately, and there is also the fault of inappropriateness as previously stated, and it is also unreasonable not to consider it a valid cognition, because non-deception is the general definition of valid cognition. Therefore, it is not showing that the grasping of the sign is non-deceptive, but rather showing that the wisdom of the sign-possessor itself is non-deceptive, thereby showing the way of indirect connection.

It is so. In showing the way of connection, it is not necessary to establish the object of connection as valid cognition, because if direct perception is also meaningless, then valid cognition will not arise. As it is said, establishing that direct perception is not deceptive is through the means of establishing connection, but it is just like not needing to accept the object of connection as valid cognition. This is what they say. Fourth, those faults stated against Acharya Dharmakirti are unreasonable, because establishing that the apprehension of the sign is not deceptive is not timely, because establishing that the mind of the sign-possessor itself is not deceptive is what is timely. This statement is unreasonable, because in establishing that the sign-possessor is not deceptive, the apprehension of the sign is related to the mind, and it must be established that it is related to the sign. The mind that apprehends the sign is the valid cognition that measures the three modes and the analytical wisdom drawn by its power, therefore it must be established that it is not deceptive with respect to the three modes. If there is subsequent cognition of the sign apprehension, then it follows that it is meaningless to show it separately from the sign-possessor, because the sign-possessor is included in the subsequent cognition. This fault also does not hold, because the subsequent cognition of the sign apprehension is included in the subsequent cognition that understands the root to be established, therefore the statement that it is meaningless to show it separately from it is not established, because the sign is not established. In general, the statement that it is meaningless to differentiate the former from the latter because it is included in the subsequent cognition is only an apparent refutation because the pervasion is not established. In the Pramāṇavārttika, just as direct perception not deceiving its own object of measurement is through the means of being connected with it, inference is also said to be the same as this, therefore establishing connection with one's own object of measurement is timely, but the statement that establishing that the sign apprehension is not deceptive is not timely is also contradictory, because establishing that it is not deceptive is necessarily required as a part of establishing connection. If there is direct perception of the sign apprehension, then the statement that it contradicts that it will immediately explain that the things appearing there are empty is unreasonable, because even if there is direct perception of the sign apprehension, there is no need to dispel doubts here, and because if it is erroneous, the doubt that it contradicts not being deceptive exists in the inference itself, therefore dispelling it is timely. Therefore, the system of Acharya Dharmakirti remains without fault. The valid cognition that measures the three modes itself is the mind that apprehends the sign, and there is no disagreement between Lha Shakya and Acharya Dharmakirti on this. Then, Shakya
