Since the 'now' cannot be negated, the distinct appearances cannot become the nature of a single, undifferentiated generality. If there are two entities, the differentiated and the undifferentiated, how can they become the nature of a single, indivisible thing? If the appearance of the general is the same substance, there will be that fault; if it is considered a different substance, then "the generality of these appearances is this" will become irrelevant. For those who accept distinction and the exclusion of others, those refutations of the same and different substance do not apply, just as that which is not a thumb is a generality that follows without distinction for the remaining four fingers. The fifth and sixth reasonings for proving that the general characteristic is non-substantial, along with the root and commentary, are understood. The seventh reasoning is "in any way," and so on. For conceptual thought, the appearance of turning away from what is not a pot cannot be a real thing, for if it were, it would have to appear as independent of appearance, but in no way does consciousness appear in that way. If things are different substances, even if one consciousness is the object of apprehension, they must appear separately, like the tactile sensations of wind and sunlight that are the object of one body consciousness. The others are understood. Apart from the self-character, no other object of measurement can have any function, and the intention of placing the self-character alone as the object of measurement is not to show that the non-substantial measure should not be the object of measurement, for if it were, it would contradict many previous and subsequent texts and many reasonings. Therefore, for individuals who are more superior than ordinary people and who possess conceptual thought, what should be adopted from now on, what produces benefit? What should be abandoned, what produces harm? Let the cause of those things to be adopted and abandoned be the main focus of consideration. Functionality is also only the self-character, and there is nothing else, so it is called the self-character alone as the object of measurement. Does consideration also apply to the general characteristic? Why is it the only object of measurement? For that, consideration is also based solely on the self-character, because the outsiders proclaim the general characteristic as a real thing, and whether or not a certain general characteristic can produce a function is considered after following the thing; if it has been determined without a doubt, then the consideration of seeking the result is

Nor will it be exhausted. The valid means of realizing the absence of inherent existence are also a branch of what was said earlier, and are close and necessary for those with conceptual minds. If it is not like that, it is like judging the good or bad of appearances by taking a eunuch as the basis for the special purpose of fulfilling the desires of a woman seeking sexual intercourse. If there is only one object to be measured, then what is the meaning of the teacher Dignāga saying that there are two objects to be measured? It is not that he considers there to be two from the point of view that the general characteristic, like the self-characteristic, has its own continuum. Rather, direct perception cognizes the self-characteristic from the point of view that it appears as its own unique nature, unmixed with others; when inference cognizes the hidden self-characteristic, it cognizes it by clinging to the self-characteristic from the point of view that a nature other than the self-characteristic appears as the self-characteristic, so it is said to be two. If it is not like that, if the valid inference that has not been cognized by the hidden examines the general characteristic itself, then it will enter into the general characteristic itself, because it is a thinker who only cognizes that much. It should not enter into the fire, because it is like not entering into cloth after completely examining a pot. Therefore, when inference measures the self-characteristic, its own apprehended object appears as the self-characteristic, and it clings to the self-characteristic. To this, others state their assertions and argue that it is unreasonable. The statement of assertion is: If it is cognized by the nature of another. This means that if the inference in which the general characteristic does not appear clearly cognizes by clinging to its own characteristic from the point of view that its own apprehended aspect appears, and it is also considered to be a mistake to cling to what is not as it is, then it is also a mistake. This means that even according to this explanation, sound is clearly present. Just as clinging to water in a mirage is a mistake, if the consciousness that clings to the general characteristic is also a mistake, then it will become non-valid because it cannot cognize the self-characteristic. The statement of the debater's consequence is that any object that is the nature of another from any object, then when that is cognized, the other will not be cognized, just as the consciousness that clings to sound does not cognize form. One's own characteristic is also the nature of another from the apprehended aspect of cognition, this is the fallacy of contradictory pervasion, and...
