Refuting the first set of four views based on "edges." This shows that the first set of four views based on the "later edge" is refuted. Refuting the second set of four views based on the "former edge." Refuting the second set of four views based on the "later edge." The first is divided into two: refuting the two views of whether or not it occurred in the past. Concluding and showing that the other two views are also unreasonable. The first is divided into two: refuting the view that it occurred in the past. Refuting the view that it did not occur in the past. The first is divided into two: the actual refutation and the conclusion of the refutation. The first is: the view that "I existed in a previous lifetime" is not reasonable because the way of holding it does not match the meaning. The object is focused on "I," and the aspect is holding that "in the past, it became like this," that is, holding that it became or existed in the nature of what it became. If the meaning it holds exists, then the "I" at the time of remembering and saying "I used to be like this" and the "I" of the previous lifetime must be the same. Because the "I" that existed in previous lifetimes is not this "I" of this life, such a view is not reasonable. If the "I" focused on in "I used to be here in the past" is established by its own nature, then the reason why the "I" of the previous and later lives become one is: if the two "I"s are established by their own nature, then they cannot but be established as either one or different by their own nature. And the difference by their own nature will also be refuted as it will be explained, so they will become one. If the two "I"s of the previous and later lives are one, then they will become permanent. If that is the case, then in the gradual cycle of existence, even one being will become many beings such as humans and hells at the same time. If someone asks: Then what does it mean when the sutra says, "I, at that time, at that moment, was a wheel-turning king honored by many?" It is unreasonable for Shakyamuni Buddha to say that, because the "I" honored by many and the "I" of Shakyamuni are not the same. Answer: This scripture refutes that the two are different streams and shows that they are one stream, but it does not show that the two "I"s are the same. This can also be seen from the sutras about previous

If it is said, mentioning youth, and then saying "this name" is another person? It should not be thought that way. Because (the Buddha) mainly spoke to prevent other continuities, saying "I myself became like that at that time, that time." It has already been explained before that the person who is the basis of my term, which I said, is not distinguished between the past and future times, but is established as a whole. If the self of the past and future lives becomes one, what is the fault? In this regard, it has already been said that it will become a constant fault. There are other faults to be said, if it is thought that the self of the previous life is the self of this life, then, since the self of the taker is one, the two aggregates of the taker in these two stages will also become one. But the two aggregates of the taker are only different from each other, because their causes and times are different. If it is thought that the aggregates of the taker are different from each other, and the self of these two stages and the two are one, this is not contradictory, so it is reasonable to think that I was born naturally in the past. If the two of the taker and the self are established as different from each other by their own characteristics, then these two are not contradictory. But, apart from the taker, that is, what is your self that is different from your nature? Because there is none, this answer is unreasonable. If it is said that, apart from the aggregates of the taker, I am not self-existent. If it is thought that the aggregates of the taker themselves are the self-existent self, then your promise that the self is self-existent does not exist, because it is only the name of the aggregate, so there is no meaning of self. If it is said that the aggregates of the taker themselves are not the same as the self and the nature, if so, then just as the aggregates of the taker arise and perish moment by moment, I will also be like that, which is unreasonable. The reason why it is unreasonable is that if it is said that I am impermanent, it will become annihilation, if it is established by nature, then the continuous flow of the latter arising from the former is unreasonable, because the self-characteristics cannot depend on the past and future being different from each other. If it does not perish, then it will become saying that I am permanent. In addition, what should the thing to be taken be like?
