If the nirvana that is not merely spoken of as nirvana exists, then by its power, craving will cease, which is the meaning of the cessation of craving. The extinguishing of a lamp is merely an example of the cessation of afflictions, and also, if there is any nirvana, the mind will become liberated or freed. Therefore, the speaker is not presenting it as non-existent. For the time being, nirvana is not a real entity that prevents future similar continuums of afflictions and births, because if it were a real entity, it would necessarily have the characteristics of aging, i.e., change, and death, i.e., destruction. Because a real entity is not mistaken for such aging and death. There is no real entity that does not have aging of change and death of destruction. This clarifies that a real entity is not mistaken for aging and death. If it has the characteristics of aging and death, then it will not become nirvana either. Furthermore, if nirvana were a real entity, then nirvana would become conditioned. Its opposite is that because it is not conditioned, or any internal object of reliance, it does not exist in any place, time, or ultimate basis of reliance. This is what is said. Furthermore, if nirvana were a real entity, how could it be that nirvana does not arise dependent on its own collection of causes? It does arise dependent on its own collection of causes. Its opposite is that there is no real entity that does not arise dependent on its own collection of causes. This is what is said. Thus, the first and third consequences possess the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena: arising, ceasing, and change. The second consequence establishes that the basis of conditioned phenomena pervades real entities, and then by negating the pervader, it negates the pervaded, which is being a real entity. The second is that the Sautrantikas and others say that although it is true that nirvana is not a real entity because of the faults mentioned above, nirvana is not a real entity because it is merely the reversal of afflictions and births. This does not negate the non-existence of the afflictions and births that are to be negated, but even if non-existence exists, it is not merely established by the power of terminology, but it is believed to exist by its own nature, so this is what is negated. If nirvana is not a real entity, then how can it be possible for it to exist as non-existent by its own nature?

It will not change. Like this, for the fault that has been pointed out, that side where nirvana is not a real entity, that is, nirvana has no entity and exists by its own nature, it is not reasonable to admit either. Because it speaks of transforming the real into the unreal, and because it has already been refuted that the real exists by its own nature, it is unreasonable for the real that exists by its own nature to be transformed into something else. If the unreal generally has the difference of the real and transforms, that may be so, but there are many unreal that are not so, therefore, with this reason, how can nirvana be refuted as existing by its own nature as unreal? Even if not all unreal are generally like that, if the unreal exists by its own nature, it must be real. At that time, the aspect of destruction called "the unreal that does not have this kind of real" must be admitted through the way of one real transforming into another real, therefore there is no fault. If it is thought that nirvana is just the cessation of afflictions and there is no more arising due to the power of karma and afflictions, so it is unreal. If that is the case, then the impermanence of afflictions and arising themselves will become nirvana, because not having afflictions and arising is itself, not something else. Therefore, if the impermanence of the two themselves becomes nirvana, then it should not be thought so either, if it is thought so, one will be liberated without effort. The commentary explains it this way, some think that for regarding nirvana as merely the non-arising of afflictions and taking a body, inferring the impermanence of afflictions and arising as nirvana is irrelevant. Whatever is obtained, it is impossible for afflictions to arise again thereafter, not arising afflictions is not the impermanence of the second destruction when afflictions previously existed. However, if not arising afflictions in the future exists by its own nature, then the second destruction when afflictions previously existed, and the reason why the two are other meanings is refuted, because it shows that the two become one, so it must be admitted like that, there is no fault. Furthermore, if nirvana is not a real entity, that is, it exists by its own nature as unreal. For example, the impermanence of the disappearance of blue, the blue thing does not exist, just like it is established depending on blue.
