When it is shown that there is not even a little bit of inherent existence on the ground, the opponent argues that, in that case, for that system, any establishment of the mundane and the supramundane will become impossible. The answer to that is that, after detailed analysis, such a view of negation with reason cannot withstand analysis even to the extent of a mote of dust. Therefore, other systems have the fault of not being able to make any establishment of "this is" and "this is not." And not only does our own system not have those faults, but all establishments are extremely reasonable, and this treatise mainly shows this. That is because the meaning of emptiness is the meaning of dependent arising, and negating the entities of action and agent is not the meaning of emptiness. If one is a wise person who is interested in the Middle Way, then one should speak in that way. When those who cling to entities strongly object that any establishment of the mundane and the supramundane cannot be established in your system, we think that it is not possible to make a determination and establishment of "this is" and "this is not" for anything. Therefore, it is not necessary for others to object, and one should not first enter into it oneself. The commentary on the twenty-fourth chapter, which is called "Examination of the Noble Truths," which is the nature of forty verses, is completed. Second, examining nirvana has three parts: explaining the text of the treatise, combining it with the scriptures of definitive meaning, and summarizing the meaning and indicating the title. The first part has two parts: debate and answer. The first part is: Here it is said that the Bhagavan taught two kinds of nirvana for those who desire liberation: nirvana with remainder and nirvana without remainder. Among them, the first is like killing all the thieves and leaving only the village, which refers to the cessation of the aggregates that are abandoned after the exhaustion of afflictions, including the view of the perishable collection, and only the aggregates that are thrown away by previous karma and afflictions remain, as it says in the sutras: With an unflinching mind, When experiencing feelings, That mind is liberated, Like a lamp that has died. The second is like killing all the thieves and destroying the village as well, which refers to the cessation of not only abandoning all afflictions, but also being separated from the remainder of the aggregates of appropriation, as it says in the sutras: Where the body is destroyed and consciousness ceases, all feelings are separated, the formations are near to peace, and the consciousness

transformed. Thus it is said. If all these internal and external dharmas are empty because they are established by their own nature, then there is no arising, that is, birth and destruction, even in the slightest. Then, what afflictions are abandoned, that is, have been abandoned, and what aggregates of clinging are extinguished, so that one desires to attain liberation through the two kinds of nirvana? It is not reasonable to think so, because the aggregates and afflictions are not established by their own nature. Therefore, one clings to the notion that things exist by their own nature. The second (part) has four (aspects): Nirvana is not reasonable from the perspective of things being established by their own nature; defining nirvana according to one's own system; refuting other ways of speaking about it; and dispelling concerns about contradicting the scriptures by such refutation. The first (aspect) is: If all these internal and external dharmas exist by their own nature, so they are not empty, then for things established by their own nature, there is no new arising of what was previously non-existent, and no new destruction of what was previously existent. Therefore, it is not reasonable to want to attain liberation by abandoning and extinguishing which afflictions and aggregates. Because afflictions and aggregates are established by their own nature, they will not change. Because for such a nature, there is no change. The second (aspect) is: Those who proclaim emptiness do not accept nirvana as the afflictions and aggregates being previously established by their own nature and later changing, so there is no fault of nirvana being impermissible because there is no arising and ceasing. So, what characteristics do they think nirvana has? Whatever is abandoned like desire, obtained like the fruits of asceticism, cut off like the aggregates of clinging, and constant like non-emptiness, these four are not established by their own nature, and there is no self-extinction and birth, the characteristic of the pacification of all elaborations, that is called nirvana. Therefore, for such a nirvana, where would there be the conceptual thought that clings to the notion that afflictions and aggregates are established by their own nature, thinking that liberation is attained by abandoning afflictions and extinguishing aggregates? As long as those two conceptual thoughts exist, nirvana cannot be attained, because it is attained only from the exhaustion of all those elaborations. If there are no afflictions or aggregates at the time of attaining nirvana, but before attaining nirvana, they exist by their own nature.
