The present is that which does not need to be established through the destruction and non-arising of other things, arising without ceasing, like a sprout, and therefore it is very different from those future moments that have not arisen and do not cease. Secondly, in this way, emptiness is shown to exist by means of the three times' characteristics, and this is also established by profound scriptures. All the scriptures that explain the absence of self-nature in the three times should be explained as having transcended discourse. In order to show this, a mere representation of the aspect of combining with definitive scriptures is as follows: In the Sutra of the Elephant's Strength, it says: "If the dharmas had some self-nature, then the Victorious Ones, including the Hearers, would know it. Permanent dharmas would not pass into sorrow, and the wise would never be without elaboration." And in the King of Samadhi Sutra, it also says: "The Dharma has been taught hundreds of thousands of times, and hundreds of thousands of Buddhas have passed away, but the Dharma and letters are inexhaustible, because there is no birth, therefore there is no exhaustion." And "At the time when the Tathagata appears, a Victorious One named Maitreya will appear, and this earth will be covered with gold, at that time, where will its appearance be?" In this way, by negating the exhaustion of the time when Buddhas appeared and passed away in the past, and the existence of the self-nature of the future time, it is shown that time has no self-nature. Thirdly, the three times, the past that has already occurred and ceased, the future that has not yet occurred and will occur again, and the present that has occurred and has not yet ceased, can never be established by their own characteristics. Therefore, one should firmly establish the ascertainment of the two truths, thinking that it is most consistent with the emptiness of no self-nature. The nature of the six verses called "Examination of Time" is the explanation of the nineteenth chapter. Secondly, refuting the proof of the existence of time by its own nature is divided into two parts: refuting that time is the co-operative cause of the production of the fruit; refuting that time is the cause of the production and destruction of the fruit. The first part has three points: explaining the text of the treatise; combining with definitive scriptures; summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first is: Here it is said that time exists by its own nature, because it is the co-operative cause of the production of the fruit. Here, even if other causes such as seeds, earth, and water are assembled, if the time is not suitable,

When nearing birth, there is birth, just like external circumstances and within. When gathered and the time arrives, the fruit itself will ripen. Thus it is said that the arising of fruit depends on time. This has three refutations: refuting arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions; refuting arising from cause alone; explaining other reasoning for refuting arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions. The first has three: refuting arising from the prior aggregation; refuting arising from the simultaneous aggregation; refuting arising from the subsequent aggregation. The first has two: refuting direct arising from the aggregation; refuting indirect arising from the aggregation. The first has two: refuting arising with the existence or non-existence of the fruit in the aggregation; refuting the existence or non-existence of the fruit itself in the aggregation. The first is: If a sprout arises from the aggregation of causes and conditions such as seeds, does the fruit, which abides in the aggregation, arise by its own nature, or does it arise by its own nature without abiding? If it is indeed that the fruit arises by its own nature from the aggregation of all causes and conditions, and if the fruit exists in the aggregation of causes and conditions, then how can it be said that the fruit arises by its own nature from the aggregation of causes and conditions itself? This is impossible, because the fruit and the support are interdependent, just as the yogurt in a wooden bowl is not produced by the wooden bowl. Furthermore, what exists is already established, like the vase in front of us, and there is no need for it to arise again. If it is said that the nature of the fruit exists in the causes and conditions, and it is revealed by conditions, so even if it exists, arising is meaningful, then if the manifestation existed before, there is no need to arise again; if it did not exist, then it would become a case of arising from non-existence. If it is indeed that the fruit arises from the aggregation of all causes and conditions, and if the fruit does not abide in the aggregation, then how can it be said that the fruit arises by its own nature from the aggregation itself? This is impossible, because it does not exist there, just like trying to extract oil from sand. In short, if the fruit exists by its own nature, there is no need for it to arise; if it does not exist in the aggregation, then it cannot be produced by its own nature. The second is: Furthermore, if the fruit exists in the aggregation of causes and conditions by way of dependence, then the aggregation must be able to be apprehended by any of the four valid cognitions, but the aggregation itself cannot be apprehended by valid cognition, so it does not exist in it, like yogurt in a wooden bowl.
