And it should be known that all that is related to the many, that is, the three thousand, should also be explained separately. If we briefly mention a part of it, the best and the worst are two, the middle and the best middle are two, the worst and the worst middle are two, the best and one and two are many, one and many are two, two and many are. If it depends on one, and exists by its own nature, then that which is depended on will exist in that place and time where it exists, and if it does not exist, then it will not depend on those. It is also unreasonable to exist without depending on each other, because it does not exist by its own essence, but it is not that it does not exist by the power of worldly terms, so one should also know others. The second has two: refuting the time accepted by other schools; refuting the time accepted by our own school, which speaks of real entities. The first is: time exists by its own nature, because it has other different meanings such as moment, instant, short time, and day and night. If you say: If time is something that exists differently in essence from moments and so on, even if you hold it as having measure through moments and so on, time is not something that is grasped through moments and so on and that exists permanently. Because it does not abide in that way, time is not held through moments and so on that are different in essence from itself. If you think: Constant time exists and it is revealed by moments and so on, because there are scriptures such as "Time ripens beings, time gathers beings, time awakens sleepers, it is very difficult to pass beyond time," which have such characteristics. Whatever is revealed by moments and so on and the permanent time to be grasped does not exist, because if it exists differently in essence from moments and so on, then it should be observable, but in reality it is not observed. Furthermore, is this time a conditioned phenomenon or an unconditioned phenomenon? If you think it exists by its own nature, then both of these are also "Birth and abiding and destruction, because they are not established, there is no conditioned," and so on, because they have already been refuted before. Because such a time has not been observed by any valid cognition, how can the ungrasped time be measured by the measure of moments and so on? It cannot. The second is: If it is true that there is no constant time, but it is nominally designated in dependence on conditioned phenomena such as form,

If time is said to be the object of expression for terms like "moment," then, if objects like form do not exist, where would time, which is distinct in essence from them, exist? Since it does not exist, if time is established in dependence on objects like form, then, according to the reasoning already explained and to be explained, if no thing is self-existent, how could time, which is attributed to it, be self-existent? It could not be. Third, here the three times are: In the commentary on the *Śataśāstra* it says: 'Among them, the future is what has not reached the present time; the past is what has passed from it; the present is what has arisen but not ceased. The present is the principal because it is the present object of focus; there, the future and the past, by which the two times of future and past are established, are not principal.' Establish it as it is said. Among them, from where the future and from where the past, by which the future and the past are established, is the present; therefore, the present is the principal of time, and the other two are not principal. What has not reached the present is also space and a rabbit's horn, etc., in order to cut off these, from the *Abhidharmakośa* it says, 'Having a cause but not yet arisen,' etc. For example, having the cause of a sprout, but not yet born as a sprout or not having reached the present, this is the future; if a basis that has not yet reached the present, it never has a cause of arising, so not having reached is not the future. Thus, where the future is the present, and where what has not passed is fruits such as sprouts, but fruits are not established in the future time. Regarding this, neither the future fruit nor its cause has done its own function and perished, so the two, cause and effect, have not been used up, as it is said in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*, etc. If merely turning away from the present is established as the past, then space, etc., and the future would also become the past, so what has passed from the present is the destruction of the present. It is also said to have arisen and ceased, for example, establishing the destruction of a sprout as the past, then 'arisen' is not said of the past, but of the past cause, the sprout, which has passed away. When the sprout has become the past, the fruit, the sprout, and its cause have both done their own function and perished, so the two, cause and effect, have both been used up.
