Because it is said, "Non-virtuous attention," and it is said, "From defiled attention, ignorance arises," therefore it is known that ignorance arises from conceptual thought. Those that arise relying on attractive, unattractive, and inverted objects are not inherently existent. If attachment and so on were established by their own nature, then because their own nature is unconditioned and does not depend on other causes and conditions. If they did not arise relying on attractive objects and so on, then they would arise relying on attractive objects and so on. Therefore, those afflictions such as desire are not truly existent; that is also the meaning of being non-existent in ultimate truth and non-existent by nature. This shows that it is not permissible to negate the object to be negated without adding distinctions such as "true"; it is the same for others as well. The conceptual thought that is the cause of ignorance is inverted, which will be explained later, while the conceptual thought that is the cause of attachment and aversion is non-virtuous attention that superimposes characteristics of attractiveness and unattractiveness. Two other teachers responded to the meaning of the first verse, saying that it arises from the three poisons and is therefore inherently existent, while the second verse refutes this and explains it as the inversion of attractiveness and unattractiveness. The Madhyamikas consider the arising of the effect from the cause to be proof of the absence of inherent existence, while the proponents of entities say that the arising of the effect from the cause is proof of inherent existence, so it can be explained from both perspectives without contradiction. In the auto-commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it is said that the three, attractiveness and so on, are the causes of the three poisons in sequence. Because it is easy to establish emptiness since it arises under the power of conceptual thought and is inherently characterized, it is also said to be the proof of that. As it is said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: "Wherever there is attachment, wherever there is aversion, wherever there is delusion, therefore those are produced by conceptual thought, and conceptual thought is not truly existent in reality." The second (refutation of afflictions) is divided into two: refutation by the reason of not having a self as a basis, and refutation by the reason of not having a mind as a basis. The first is: the existence and non-existence of the self, in whatever way, is not established by its own nature, which has already been explained in the examination of the self and so on. Since that does not exist, how can the existence and non-existence of the afflictions that rely on that self be established by their own nature?

Therefore, it will exist and will not change. If one thinks, since my existence and non-existence are not inherently existent, what is the reason why the existence and non-existence of afflictions are not established inherently? Afflictions are like drawings on a wall, they need to rely on conceptualization to arise, so to which basis will these afflictions belong? It is impossible without a basis. If that basis is examined, if it is a self or a sentient being, then this has already been extensively refuted, so it is not an inherently established existence. Without a basis of a self or any person, none of the afflictions are inherently existent in any basis. Secondly, if one does not admit that the basis of afflictions is previously established, and there is no self as a basis, but afflictions arise relying on the afflicted mind, and that mind also arises simultaneously with the afflictions, they will say so. Just as when examining the view of the aggregates clinging to one's own body, the self of the object is examined in five ways and is found not to exist, similarly, the afflictions that cause affliction do not exist in five ways for the afflicted one who is the object of affliction. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that the afflicted mind itself is a mental affliction, because otherwise the agent and the action would become one. Those two are also not different in their own characteristics, because if they were different, they would become independent. Since there is neither one nor other in nature, mutual dependence and having a basis are also non-existent in essence. Just as when examining the view of the aggregates clinging to one's own body, the self is non-existent in five ways, similarly, the afflicted mind is non-existent in five ways for the afflictions, as mentioned before, combine them, this is just mentioned in passing. Thirdly, if one thinks that afflictions exist inherently, because their causes, the attractive, unattractive, and inverted, exist inherently. The objects of attractive, unattractive, and inverted are not from their own nature, that is, they are not existent in essence, because they are interdependent, and they will be refuted as inherently existent. Therefore, any afflictions that arise relying on the attractive, unattractive, and inverted are not inherently existent.
