So. The third is: If all phenomena were established by their own nature, then the establishment of the Tathagata and his teachings would be completely impossible. Because of the emptiness of dependent origination, all establishments are very reasonable, so establishing the Tathagata as a refuge, etc., is also very reasonable only in this way. The chapter called "Examination of the Tathagata" is the nature of sixteen verses, and is the explanation of the twenty-second chapter. Second, refuting the inherent existence of afflictions is divided into three: explaining the treatise, combining the meaning with reasoning, summarizing the meaning and stating the name. The first is: Here it is said that the cause of existence is inherent existence, because its cause is inherently existent. Here, karma arises from afflictions, and the results of karma and afflictions, birth and death, are transmitted one after another, and also arise, and this is also the continuum of existence. The main cause is affliction, because if it is eliminated, even if there is karma, the continuum of existence will cease. If afflictions were inherently existent, then the continuum of existence would also be inherently existent, but it does not exist. There are two ways to refute this: refuting the inherent existence of afflictions, and refuting that its antidote, that is, the method of eliminating afflictions, is inherently existent. The first is divided into five: refuting with the reasoning of dependent origination, refuting with the reasoning that the basis is not inherently existent, refuting with the reasoning that the cause is not inherently existent, refuting with the reasoning that the object is not inherently existent, and refuting with other reasoning that the cause is not inherently existent. The first is: In the Sutra Pitaka, it is said that desire, hatred, and ignorance arise from inappropriate attention. As it is said in the Sutra Pitaka: Desire, your root is, know, arises from discrimination. Only three poisons are mentioned, because all other afflictions are the result of these three, so these three are the main ones. That is, desire arises from relying on the appearance of pleasure, hatred arises from relying on the appearance of displeasure, and ignorance arises from relying on inversion, and discrimination is the common cause of these three. In the Sutra of Dependent Origination, it is said: What is the cause of ignorance?
