Therefore, since it is established, all forms are empty. Since what can be grasped is empty of inherent existence, how can the Tathagata, who is empty of inherent existence, be attached to a self-nature that does not change? Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the Tathagata, who is designated in dependence on the aggregates, has inherent existence. The second point is: Alas, we have abandoned other teachers such as the grain-eaters and have taken refuge in the Tathagata and are seeking liberation. By saying that the Tathagata is without inherent existence through "what can be grasped, the grasper," etc., you have cut off our hope of liberation. Therefore, is it acceptable to argue with you, who are uprooting the medicinal tree of the Tathagata? Here, people like you have cut off our hope of liberation. Because we desire liberation, we have abandoned the tenets of other teachers and have taken refuge in the Buddha, but we cannot tolerate the sound of selflessness, which is not shared by all non-Buddhists. Then, we have gone forth from the very path that is in accordance with the wilderness of the evil path of samsara. I will not say that the Tathagata, who is liable to fault through slander, is empty, that is, non-existent. Furthermore, the Tathagata shows that there is no inherent existence, and wishing to express the meaning that is not inverted, one should not say that it is not empty, that is, that it has inherent existence. One should not speak of either of these two, nor should one say that it is neither existent nor non-existent, because in ultimate truth, none of these four are accepted. However, if one does not speak in conventional terms, then those to be trained will not understand. Therefore, abiding in the truth of conventional terms, for the sake of the meaning of conventional terms, in the presence of those to be trained, one speaks by conceptually imputing emptiness, non-emptiness, both emptiness and non-emptiness, and neither emptiness nor non-emptiness. Therefore, one should speak in order to designate that meaning. The intention with which the Teacher spoke of emptiness and so forth has already been explained in the eighteenth chapter. Just as the Tathagata does not possess the four ultimate truths of emptiness and so forth, How are the four wrong views of permanence and impermanence, both permanence and impermanence, and neither, which are included by permanence and impermanence, grasped?

Where is the peace that exists by the nature of the Buddha? It is not there. Likewise, the meaning held by the four wrong views included in the world having an end and not having an end, etc., both having and not having an end, and neither of the two, is also not there in this peace. Any opponent who thinks, "This is true, and the others are foolish," and thus clings tightly, then, regarding the Tathagata's Nirvana, that is, after Nirvana, the Tathagata exists or does not exist, and both exists and does not exist, and neither of the two, they discriminate with these four kinds of inverted discriminations. In the root verses of the translation of the Clear Words, it says: "Whoever holds that the Tathagata exists, clinging with tight clinging, he then, after Nirvana, discriminates and says that he does not exist." Although the commentary that corresponds to this has also been translated, in Buddhapalita's work it says: "Whoever clings with tight clinging, he then, after Nirvana, discriminates and says that the Tathagata exists or does not exist, thus discriminating with discrimination." Translating it in this way, and seeing that the commentary is made in accordance with this, is a good translation, so it is declared in this way. According to whose view, the Tathagata is empty by nature, for this, after the Buddha's Nirvana, the Buddha exists or does not exist, or both exists and does not exist, and neither of the two, holding with the thought of thinking in this way, it is not reasonable. Such twelve views, and the two views of body and life being one and different, are said to be the fourteen unanswerable views. Because all of these are based on asking about the existence of self-nature, the answer is not given. Because those who ask in this way are not vessels of the profound, the meaning of no-self cannot be explained, and also explaining permanence and impermanence, etc., will generate views of permanence and annihilation, and in reality, it is meaningless. Here, the world refers to the self, and that can also refer to the Tathagata, so here all of these are connected to the Buddha. Although the last two views are not mentioned here, the meaning of those two being unreasonable is already included in the previous refutation of the aggregates being one and different. The third is that those who, due to their weak intelligence, think that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has transcended all the elaborations of the world.
