If there is no such thing as "how it exists," it is because if self-nature is established, it cannot go beyond these two ways of existing. If it is thought that even if it is not coexistent or non-coexistent, it is established in a way that cannot be expressed by these two, then what is established in an inexpressible way? If it is thought that it is a mixture of the two, then the two have not been established separately before, so there is no mixture. If it is thought that the meaning of inexpressible is that it cannot be definitely grasped by the mind, then like the blue and white of a barren woman's child, arising and ceasing do not exist by their own nature, so their cause and time also do not exist by their own nature. The second part has three points: refuting arising and ceasing on the basis of what is exhausted and unexhausted; refuting arising and ceasing on the basis of things; refuting arising and ceasing on the basis of emptiness and non-emptiness. The first point is: if it is thought that arising and ceasing exist by their own nature, then on which of the two do they exist: the dharma of things that are exhausted and the dharma of things that are not exhausted? On this point, in the dharma of things that are exhausted, arising, that is, production, does not exist by its own nature, because for things that are established by their own nature, it is contradictory for arising and ceasing to gather on one thing. In the dharma of things that are not exhausted, arising also does not exist by its own nature, because if a thing established by its own nature is not exhausted, then it will not possess the characteristic of a thing—destruction. In things that are exhausted, destruction does not exist by its own nature, because that is the thing to be refuted that does not exist, so it is not reasonable to establish destruction as existing by its own nature on it. In things that are not exhausted, destruction also does not exist by its own nature, for the reasons stated above. The second point is: arising and ceasing exist by their own nature, because things exist by their own nature, and it is the basis of the two, if it is thought so, then things do not exist by their own nature, so arising and ceasing also do not exist by their own nature. The reason why things do not exist by their own nature is this: arising and ceasing existing by their own nature has been refuted before, and without the two, things do not exist by their own nature, because the two are the characteristics of things. The Lamp of Wisdom says: Non-existence is not the dharma of things, like the mane of a turtle. Arising and ceasing are the dharma of things, so they truly exist, it is said.

In response, arising and ceasing do not exist in the ultimate sense, therefore things do not exist in the ultimate sense either, because things are of the nature of arising and ceasing, so this argument is not established. Similarly, things are not existent, because there is no basis, so the arising and ceasing that are dependent are also non-existent, this is explained by reversing the first and second halves. Third, if arising and ceasing are inherently existent, then consider whether their inherent existence relies on emptiness or non-emptiness. In that case, it is not reasonable for arising and ceasing, which are inherently existent, to rely on emptiness, because there is no basis, like a flower in the sky. It is also not reasonable for arising and ceasing to exist in non-emptiness, which is inherently existent, because non-emptiness cannot arise or cease, so it is not its basis. Third, if arising and ceasing are inherently existent, then they do not go beyond two ways of existing, that is, it is not reasonable for arising and ceasing to exist as one in essence, because things that contradict each other, like light and darkness, cannot be one. It is also not reasonable for arising and ceasing to exist as different in essence, because if they are established as other by their own characteristics, they will become unrelated and separated, and these two are not confused with each other. The second part has two points: seeing is not proof; and showing its proof. The first point: Why do this detailed analysis? Because even cowherds and women see arising and ceasing as established by their own characteristics. If you say that these two are inherently existent, then, if you think that arising and ceasing are seen as established by their own nature, then that reason does not necessarily prove that arising and ceasing are inherently existent, because just as cowherds and women see cities of gandharvas and illusions, and those with cataracts see hairnets and flies, the appearance of arising and ceasing as established by their own nature is also seen because of ignorance and being defiled by it. The second part has two points: refuting the arising of arising and ceasing from the same and different classes; refuting the arising of things from themselves and others. The first point: If arising and ceasing are inherent
