Just as it is impossible to make someone believe you have goods when you have none, both teachers have said. Because the other person will have the thought, "This person has no goods to give," that is why the statement is made, but it is not that this thought cannot be generated, but rather that the thought that "having no goods is a kind of goods" cannot be generated. Similarly, when showing that things are not inherently existent, it is not that one cannot think that these are empty of truth, but rather that one cannot think that "things being empty of truth" is true. Therefore, even if one thinks that all phenomena are empty, it is irrecoverable, and to think that this treatise teaches this is a great falsehood. The meaning of "viewing emptiness" as stated by the two teachers refers to clinging to emptiness as a real entity, that is, clinging to emptiness as truly existent or clinging to emptiness as inherently existent, how could it merely be thinking "without inherent existence"? The commentary on the *Hundred Verses* also says, "If emptiness were established by its own nature, then things would become possessed of their own nature, but it is not so." It says, "Without non-empty, there is no empty, from what does it arise? How can an opponent arise without something else?" And this treatise is also quoted in its commentary. Previously, the Shravaka school admitted that emptiness was truly existent, and the previous and subsequent treatises refute this point, so it is definitely not merely refuting the existence of selflessness. If the meaning of the treatise is thus misunderstood, then one would slander that the ultimate truth does not exist, and even if it does exist, if one cultivates a firm conviction in it, it would be considered clinging to characteristics, thus becoming a great obstacle to cultivating a view that accurately ascertains the true meaning. Secondly, the source of the sutra quoted by that treatise is from the *Akshayamati Sutra* of the *Ratnakuta Sutra*. It says, "Those who do not make phenomena empty by emptiness, but phenomena themselves are empty; those who do not make phenomena signless by signlessness, but phenomena themselves are signless; those who do not make phenomena wishless by wishlessness, but phenomena themselves are wishless; whoever...

Thus, differentiation is, O son of good family, the correct differentiation of the Dharma of the Middle Way. O son of good family, those who focus on emptiness and meditate on emptiness, I say that they are the most degenerate from this scripture. Thus it is said. Emptiness and so forth do not make the dharmas empty, but it is said that the dharmas themselves are empty, which means that the dharmas themselves are true, and they are not considered empty because something else is true. To meditate on emptiness is said to be the most degenerate, and the way to meditate is that those who focus on emptiness should not think that emptiness is the object of true focus. Otherwise, it would contradict what was said earlier about meditating on the three, emptiness and so forth, as the Middle Way. There is also no way to combine the metaphor and meaning of the view of emptiness that cannot be cured. It is said in the sutra: O son of good family, for example, if a person is sick and a doctor gives him medicine, the medicine can remove all his diseases, but the medicine remains in his stomach and is not digested. O son of good family, what do you think? Can that person get rid of his illness? He said: O Bhagavan, he cannot get rid of it. Why? Because the medicine can remove all diseases, but if the medicine remains in the stomach and is not digested, then that person's disease will become very serious. The Blessed One said: O son of good family, thus, if all views arise from emptiness, O son of good family, if someone only sees emptiness, I say that he cannot be cured. Thus it is said. The metaphor of the medicine not being digested, first purifying the former, and then causing disease by not digesting itself, should be applied to the two schools of our own school that speak of real things, who believe that selflessness is true, and to some of the former people of the Land of Snows (Tibet), who said that if things are analyzed to the extreme with reason, they cannot be analyzed. After thus preventing it, they allow the emptiness of such prevention to be true. By understanding the emptiness that is prevented by what is to be prevented, many manifest afflictive diseases can also be reversed, but by holding emptiness as true, afflictive diseases can also be generated. Other than those, if one does the two ways of emptiness and non-emptiness, then the way of emptiness is not established by valid cognition, but is slander.
