Pages 301 to 400. Pages 301 to 400. Also, it is established by reason that they deceive by appearing, and the scriptures also say that formations are deceptive, therefore things are established as being without inherent existence. As it says in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, "All phenomena are empty, in the manner of being without inherent existence." Therefore. Here, the sutras say that Nirvana is true, in order to show that formations are not true. By the key point of saying that they are of the nature of deception, what is not deceptive is called the ultimate truth, but it is not established as being true by the power of its own nature. Secondly, if in that way, by the very nature of deception, all formations are shown to be false, then since there is nothing that can perform a function, it would turn into a nihilistic wrong view that defames all things, so they say. The sutra quoted earlier is a sutra famous among the Hearer schools, but the two schools of Meaning Advocates do not accept the meaning of that sutra in that way, so they argue in this way. This is taking everything that is false as being like a rabbit having horns on its head, and thinking that if that were the case, all cause and effect would disappear. Although it is not established by its own nature, it appears as such, and is established as false, and they speak without knowing that those meanings that appear can also perform actions, like an illusion. Those who still say that the formations that deceive you, the nature of formations being deceptive, exist by their own nature, you are right. If someone like you did not deceive in that way, then there would be no point in establishing the deception of children. If it is said that any dharma that deceives is false, then what is being deceived at that time? And what would become a defamation that holds things to be non-existent? If things existed by their own nature, then when things are shown to be false, defaming them would make them seem non-existent. When there is not even a little bit of something that exists by its own nature, then what is being deceived at that time? Since it is not said that nothing that exists does not exist, that accusation is unreasonable. If you want to use that scripture to show the falsity of denying the truth, if it does not show that things cannot perform a function, then what does this scripture show? The Blessed One therefore said to him that formations are false, what he said was

It is not showing without anything, but completely showing the emptiness of unoriginated by nature. As stated in the *Akṣayamatinirdeśa*, "Whatever is born from conditions is unborn. It does not have the nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful." Thus, what depends on conditions is said to be the meaning of unoriginated by nature. As such, saying that formations are false also shows unoriginated by nature, and does not show the non-existence of what is prevented from being born. Thus, appearing there while being unoriginated by nature is said to be the meaning of the scriptures that say it is deceptive and false. The third has two parts: showing how to explain the meaning of the scriptures in another way; refuting the arguments for explaining it in that way. First, the Śrāvakayāna school, based on the sutra previously cited, which says it is a dharma of destruction, believes that all things do not remain in the second time from the time they are established by themselves, but appearing to remain is the meaning of deception and falsehood. In this way, unoriginated by nature is not the meaning of the scriptures, but it is said that not abiding in nature is the meaning of being without nature or false or without truth. There are two reasons for this, the first being: if things do not have the nature of being established by their own essence, then these things will not appear to change, because of appearing. Not being established by one's own essence is not the meaning of the sutra, but changing by one's own essence is the meaning of the sutra of not abiding in nature. The second reason is that the nature of things not being established by their own essence does not exist, because it is necessary to admit that the dharma of things as the subject is emptiness. For the son of a barren woman who does not exist, his blueness is unreasonable, because as the subject does not exist, the dharma that depends on it is also unreasonable, so things exist by nature. If things do not have the nature of being established by their own essence, then what dharma is this change the essence of? These opponents are well-versed in the system of reasoning, so when explaining the meaning of the scriptures that say no-self in some of the scriptures they have admitted, they say that it refers to the impermanence of not abiding in one's own essence, not to the existence or non-existence of nature and truth.
