It is seen as dependent on determining the absence of inherent existence. And, because its object is seen as self, one initially contemplates the self as the object of self-grasping, wondering whether it exists by its own nature or not. The second part has two points: refuting that the self and the aggregates are of the same nature, and refuting that the self and the aggregates are of different natures. The first point is: Thus, if the self, the object of self-grasping, exists by its own nature, then it will not exceed two ways of existing. One should contemplate whether it is one or different, established by its own characteristics with the aggregates. Because one and not one, if one is refuted, then the other must be completely refuted, because the three aggregates are contradictory. Having contemplated thus, if the self and the aggregates are of one entity established by their own characteristics, then the self will become something that arises and ceases in each moment, because the aggregates arise and cease. Other schools do not accept this, and our own school should not accept it either. If the basis on which the thought "I" arises, that self is established as one with the aggregates by its own characteristics, then it will also become one with the aggregates of this life, and at that time there will be no other birth, it will become something that arises here and has a beginning, as explained in the twenty-seventh chapter. Furthermore, if it arises and ceases separately in each moment, then it will become separate by its own characteristics. If that is the case, one will not remember past lives, saying "I was a king, I was a child," because at that time the self's body has perished, and in this life a self with a different nature from that has arisen. Furthermore, just as there are many aggregates, the self will also become many. And, the self is merely a name for the aggregates, therefore admitting that the self is substantially existent is meaningless. And, the object to be taken will itself become the taker, therefore the agent and the action will become one, there is this fault. Therefore, one should generate a firm conviction that the self and the aggregates are not established as one by their own nature. The second point is: If the self is established as different from the aggregates by its own characteristics, then the self will not have the characteristics of arising, ceasing, abiding, and changing that characterize compounded phenomena, because it will be separate from those characteristics, just as it is separate from the characteristics of a horse and a cow. If that is the case, it will become a self.

it will become non-existent, because it is unconditioned, like nirvana and flowers in the sky. Among the two objects of the innate ego-grasping, it is also unreasonable to be an object, because it is unconditioned. Or, the nature of the five aggregates, which can be accommodated by the form aggregate, can be felt, can be grasped as a sign, can be manifestly fabricated, and can be distinguished in various objects, will become other than its own nature. If you think so, just as you grasp the mind as other than form, I will also be seen as other than the nature of the five aggregates, but in reality, it is not grasped in this way. If other schools think that I say that I am a real entity different from the five aggregates, this is not a harm, because although they say that I am a real entity, they do not say it by grasping it with innate consciousness as they say. So what is it? Because they are afraid of not understanding the meaning of dependent imputation, and only say that I am a mere name, they also fall away from the conventional truth, are deceived by similar reasons, and thus speculate and proclaim the nature of a real self different from the five aggregates. When it is said that I and the near-taking are established in dependence on each other in the examination of karma and the agent, they also prevent the examined self from existing in the conventional. In this way, if I am established by my own nature, then I and the five aggregates must be established as either one or different entities established by their own nature. When it is seen that both of these situations are harmed by reasoning, it will be convinced that I am not established by my own nature at all. The attainment of this conviction is the attainment of the view of realizing the selflessness of the object grasped by the innate ego-grasping. Second, from then on, if you examine whether the object "mine" that the innate ego-grasping grasps as "this is mine" is established by its own nature, then if I am not existent by my own nature, then how can "mine" exist by its own nature? In this way, it will be realized that "mine" is also without self-nature. Even if the wisdom that realizes that "I" is without self-nature does not itself grasp "mine" as without self-nature, when the mind is directed by the method of examining whether "mine" has self-nature or not, it will be realized without relying on other proofs based on the action of the previous wisdom. Therefore, the scriptures say reason
