Now, it is explained that the verse "Liberation of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, liberated by the exhaustion of karma and afflictions" elucidates the liberation of the Mahāyāna. Buddhapālita and the Prasannapadā state that both consider this verse to explain the liberation from saṃsāra, which is common to both the Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna. In the Prasannapadā, Āryadeva argues that if the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have not comprehended the selflessness of phenomena, then the aforementioned statement is not the view of the noble ones and is therefore unreasonable. In the Ratnāvalī, it is said that those who fear that their own schools have no basis have not experienced the meaning of suchness. This is said to the Śrāvaka schools holding the tenets of the Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika schools who hold the Prātimokṣa vows, and it is not shown that all Hīnayāna practitioners have not experienced it. Those of the Hīnayāna who realize the suchness of persons and phenomena, having abandoned the extremes of falling into the abyss of permanence and annihilation with a view that is free from extremes, are therefore Mādhyamikas. Although they are in danger of falling into the extreme of peace, this does not harm their being Mādhyamikas, otherwise it would be impossible to be a Mādhyamika until one is liberated from the bonds of existence and the decline of peace. The second part is divided into two points: refuting contradictions with the scriptures, and the reason why suchness cannot be expressed anywhere. The first point is: if the appearance of suchness is such that neither internal nor external objects can be discerned, and therefore the conceptual thoughts of the view of self towards these two are exhausted, then that is suchness. Then, how can it not contradict the sutra which says: "Oneself is one's own protector, who else can be the protector? By taming oneself well, the wise will attain heaven." and "Black and white karma will not perish, one will experience what one has done." How can these many statements not contradict each other? Then, the sutra states: "Here there is no self or sentient being, these phenomena are all with causes." and "Likewise, the self is not form, the self does not possess form, there is no self in form, there is no form in the self." It is also stated in the same way for the remaining four aggregates. And it is also said: "All phenomena are without self." How can these statements not contradict the previous scriptures? Therefore, it is necessary to seek the intention of the Buddha in teaching in this way, and the intention is this: sentient beings and self who come here from the previous world, and who go from here to the next world, and here

In order to turn away from non-virtue those inferior beings who slander the arising of happiness and suffering from virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and who indulge in evil without restraint, the Buddhas have also established the name "I" in some sutras, that is, they have established that there is an I. Those who do good and turn away from non-virtue are bound by the firm view of self, like a bird tied with a very long rope. Even though they have become very free, those intermediate beings who cannot transcend the three realms and go to the city of liberation. In order to relax the view of annihilation and to generate the desire for nirvana, it is also shown in some sutras that there is no self. For those superior beings who, due to the particularity of previous habits, have special faith in the profound Dharma, and who are able to fathom the meaning of the profound scriptures, it is also shown that neither self nor non-self are established by their own nature. In the Sutra Requested by Kashyapa, it is also said: "Kashyapa, the so-called self is an extreme view. The so-called non-self is the second extreme view. The middle way between these two extreme views is that which is without form, invisible, without support, without appearance, without discrimination, and without place. Kashyapa, this is called the Middle Way, which is the correct discrimination of all dharmas." The Ratnavali also says: "Thus, self and non-self, are not truly perceived as they are. The view of self and non-self, is therefore rejected by the Great Hero. Seeing and hearing, etc., the Victorious One said, are neither true nor false nor deceptive. Because they contradict each other, neither of them is the true meaning." Therefore, in conventional terms, both self and non-self exist, but in ultimate terms, they do not, so they are not truly perceived, and both the self that conforms to non-self and the self that does not conform to it are not the real meaning. This order is stated in the Hundred Treatises: "First, reject non-meritorious deeds, in the middle, reject the self, and finally, reject all views. Whoever knows this is wise." It is consistent with what is said such as "How are grammarians?" Thus, without refuting the object of clinging to the person as an independently existing entity, the accumulation of karma and its results
