The support that thinks 'it is mine' is the continuum of the person in whom this thought arises, and it is also the support for the connection between action and result. Secondly, there are two divisions: refuting inherent existence, and refuting the establishment of inherent existence. First, there are two divisions: the fault of becoming permanent and uncreated, and the fault of producing endless ripening. First, there are two divisions: the actual fault, and stating the harm of accepting it. The first is: the non-existence of action by its own nature must be accepted without doubt, otherwise, if action were established by its own nature, it would undoubtedly become permanent, because there is no other change in its own nature. Therefore, action would become uncreated by an agent, because there is no action by an agent for what is permanent. Therefore, virtuous and non-virtuous actions will ripen in the world without being done. Second, there are two divisions: contradiction with scriptures, and contradiction with worldly fame. The first is: if action is not done by an agent, then not doing killing and so on, also because of being related to those actions, one will face the fear of encountering the result of uncreated actions. For pure practitioners of brahmacharya, because non-brahmacharya is not done, there will also be the fault of not being in brahmacharya in that respect, so no one will be liberated from suffering. The second is: plowing fields and doing business, etc., striving for the sake of results, those efforts also exist without being done, so the efforts become meaningless. There is no doubt that this will also contradict all worldly sayings such as "make a vase" and "pick up a blanket," because all things such as vases exist without being done. The distinction of "this is a virtuous person and this is an evil person" is also not reasonable, because both exist even if they are not done. The second is: furthermore, that action, even if it is a fully ripened result, will produce ripening again and again, because it has not lost its own nature as in the case of not being ripened. Therefore, if one thinks that action is inherently existent in that way, then because action does not disappear at any time, the faults as mentioned above will occur, therefore action is not inherently existent.

Therefore, there is no fault of viewing permanence or annihilation. The second part has three points: refuting the argument that karma exists by its own nature; refuting the argument that both karma and afflictions exist by their own nature; and refuting other arguments that karma exists by its own nature. First point: If it is said that karma exists by its own nature, because of ignorance it is created, as it is said in the scriptures, it exists because of acceptance, because the cause of karma, afflictions, exists by its own nature. Answer: Defiled karma is the nature of afflictions, and it arises from afflictions. And those afflictions are not truly existent either, because they arise from the power of conceptualization. If those afflictions are not truly existent, then how can the karma caused by them be truly existent? It is not. Second point: Karma and afflictions exist by their own nature, because their result, the body, exists by its own nature. Answer: The scriptures say that karma and afflictions are the cause of bodies. If karma and afflictions are empty of inherent existence, as has already been established, then what more is there to say about their result, the body, not existing by its own nature? What exists? Nothing. Third point: Karma exists by its own nature, because the one who experiences happiness and suffering as its result exists by its own nature. Obscured by ignorance, repeatedly reborn in the five realms, beings bound by the bonds of craving are the experiencers of the results of karma. That experiencer of the result is also not other than the agent of the cause, and the experiencer itself is not the agent of the karma, because it cannot be said to be the same or different. Answer: Because this karma arises from four conditions, including causal conditions, and does not exist by its own nature, it has already been discussed in the examination of conditions. What does not arise from conditions also does not exist, and if there is no cause, then the result and the cause are also unreasonable. As it is said in the examination of karma, therefore the agent of karma also does not exist by its own nature. If karma and the agent do not exist by their own nature, then how can the result born from karma be established by its own nature?
