Because there is no examination that is in accordance with the seed lineage, and because the cycle of the five destinies is established by the distinctions of beings, species, birthplaces, and elements, and also because it is admitted that karma does not exist by its own nature, it is also not an eternalist position. Because this dharma of "karma is not wasted" is the teaching of the Buddha who is free from the sleep of ignorance. Because there is no fault of karma falling into permanence or annihilation, this examination that we speak of is the only reasonable one, they assert. The second part has three points: karma is without self-nature, therefore there is no permanence or annihilation; refuting that karma exists by its own nature; and showing by example that without self-nature, actions can be performed. The first point is: if karma arises by its own nature, then if it remains until it ripens, it is permanent, and if it ceases, it is annihilation, but because karma does not arise by its own nature, how can it become permanence that exists by its own nature and annihilation that ceases by its own nature? The reason is this: karma is not established by its own nature, therefore. If karma does not arise by its own nature, then in the scripture it says: The karmas done by sentient beings, will not be wasted even after hundreds of eons. When the causes and conditions come together, the fruits will ripen. If it is said like that, the intention of the Bhagavan is that because karma is not born from its own characteristics, therefore it will not be wasted, that is how it is, therefore, that scripture is not harmful to us. The Hearer's school thinks that if karma does not arise by its own nature, then karma should not exist, so it contradicts the statement that karma is not wasted. In response to this debate, (the answer) is, how is it related that because it is not born from its own nature, it is not wasted? If it is thought that not being wasted means that karma produces its result, then there is no fault. If this objection is considered from the ultimate point of view, then karma is not produced in the ultimate sense, so its result will not be wasted. If it is argued that there is a contradiction between not being produced in conventional terms and the result not being wasted, then it can be explained in many ways that there is no contradiction, and it will also be elaborated. If the reason that it is not born from its own characteristics is used to establish that the result is not wasted, then that reason...

Then, how is it established that in conventional truth, karma produces its ripening without contradiction? The Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior states: "Since its own nature does not cease, therefore, even without the Alaya, this has the power. Therefore, even after karma has ceased for a long time, know that it can also produce a true result." As it is said, it should be understood that this verse from the Root Wisdom was quoted in the Engaging Commentary at that time to accomplish that meaning. Regarding this, it is necessary to accept that the two karmas accumulated earlier produce two results after a long time. Since karma also ceases and disappears in the second moment of its arising, there is no karma immediately before the result, and the cessation of karma is also non-existent. So, how does karma produce the result? In order to answer this question, in order to establish the power of karma at the time of cessation, some of our own schools imagine the Alaya consciousness, others imagine non-wastefulness and attainment, and still others imagine the mind stream influenced by the karmic imprints. If karma does not arise from its own nature, then there would be no cessation, and it would not be possible for a non-ceasing karma to produce a result. Therefore, since karmas do not perish, the relationship between karma and result is very reasonable, as stated in the Engaging Commentary. Non-cessation means: as stated in "Since its own nature does not cease," it means that it does not cease by its own nature, but it does not mean that it does not acknowledge the cessation of conventional truth. Such as "Even after karma has ceased for a long time," etc., and as stated in "Thus, having ceased, its own nature is non-existent, from karma also a result arises." Moreover, in the sutra quoted in the Engaging Commentary at that time, it also says: "What is said to be inexhaustible, what is said to be the exhaustion of karma, the principle of emptiness is inexhaustible, the principle of conventional truth is shown to be exhausted." Therefore, for those schools that do not even acknowledge phenomena established by their own characteristics in conventional truth, to establish that cessation can function, as previously explained. Therefore, even if the Alaya consciousness etc. are not acknowledged, the relationship between karma and result is reasonable. Therefore, it is said that the establishment of "Since its own nature does not cease, therefore" and the arising of result from the cessation of karma are not contradictory. Those who believe that arising and ceasing etc. are established by their own characteristics, because they believe that cessation is real, it is unreasonable for a result to arise from cessation. The cessation of the cessation of karma is a continuation of the same kind.
