。Manjushri said, "Release this sinful demon, let him return to his own place!" Then, transforming into the youthful Manjushri, he spoke these words to the sinful demon: "Sinful one, who released you, and who bound you?" The demon replied, "Manjushri, I do not know who bound me." Manjushri said, "Sinful one, just as you perceive yourself as bound when you are not bound, so too, all ignorant ordinary beings perceive impermanence as permanence, perceive suffering as happiness, perceive selflessness as self, perceive impurity as purity, perceive formlessness as having form, and perceive feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness as feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness when they are without feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness." Furthermore, he asked, "Sinful one, if you are to be liberated, from where will you be liberated?" The demon replied, "I will not be liberated from anywhere." Manjushri said, "Sinful one, similarly, those who are to be liberated will not be liberated from anywhere unless they fully understand the false cognition. Only after fully understanding that is it called liberation." Thus it is said, from this scripture it can be seen that just as a burning fire in a dream is extinguished by water, merely completely severing the creeper of inverted thoughts is called liberation. Third, if samsara, nirvana, the bondage of afflictions, and the liberation from severing that bondage, existed by their own nature, then realizing that this is impossible, and not clinging to their reality, but merely establishing them according to the convention of names, then all of these are perfectly reasonable, and one should firmly establish the understanding of profound dependent origination. The Examination of Bondage and Liberation, is the explanation of the sixteenth treatise, which is by nature ten verses. Second, refuting the proof of bondage and liberation being established by their own nature, is divided into three parts: explaining the text of the treatise, combining it with scriptures of definitive meaning, and summarizing the points and indicating the name. The first part is divided into two parts: debate and answer. The first part is: Previously, in order to prove that things exist by their own nature, the assertion that samsara exists by its own nature was refuted, samsara exists by its own nature because it is the basis of the relationship of cause and effect. Like this, birth and death continuing from one to another

If cyclic existence exists inherently from actions or sentient beings, then the results of actions done here will appear in other lifetimes, and all actions will be connected with results. If there were no such cyclic existence, then the mind would perish as soon as it arose, and since there would be no ripening at the time when actions bear fruit, actions and results would only become unrelated. Therefore, since cyclic existence is the basis for the connection of actions and results, cyclic existence exists inherently. What are actions and results? There are two aspects to this: the distinction between virtue and non-virtue, and how to abandon permanence and annihilation in relation to them. The first has two aspects: the distinction between virtuous and non-virtuous minds, and the distinction of the detailed classification of actions. The first is: because self-grasping is placed on this, "self" refers to the person who is imputed in dependence on the aggregates. That very person, under the influence of attachment and so on, prevents engaging in killing and so on, thus properly restraining and accumulating, and is able to produce the ripening of actions, so it is definitely the mind. Moreover, it is called Dharma because it protects from going to bad destinies. Is that all? No, it is not. Generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma, that is, the four ways of gathering disciples, and engaging in protecting from fear and so on, whatever mind benefits others, and the mind of loving-kindness, that is, the mind that arises in relation to friends, or whatever mind benefits oneself, that is also Dharma. The sound of Dharma is explained in three ways in the scriptures: all phenomena, with or without outflows, are the meaning of holding their own characteristics; the ten virtues and so on are the meaning of protecting from going to bad destinies; and in the phrase "I go for refuge to the Dharma," Nirvana is the meaning of liberation from going to the cycle of the five realms, therefore it is called Dharma. Conversely from these three, engaging in killing and so on without restraint, and harming others, and the mind that always torments others, know that this is not Dharma. Just as the seed of rice is the uncommon cause of the sprout of rice, and the earth and so on are the common cause, so too, these three minds are the seeds of the ripening desirable fruit, while the actions of individuals and so on are merely common causes. When is that? When seeing
