It is also so. Seeing the change of self-nature, saying that it is not self-existent, this is what is said, not just not admitting other changes. The second point is that since self-established is not permanent, then for the idea that things exist and change from a previous state to non-existence, if you say "it must be so", you will fall into clinging to permanence and regarding it as annihilation. Clinging to permanence and annihilation will also hinder ascension and liberation, causing great faults, so the wise should not dwell on the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Also, why would the view of things and things not existing become eternalism and nihilism? Because whatever says that self-nature exists, self-nature has no change, so it will never not exist. Therefore, admitting that self-nature exists will become eternalism, but merely admitting existence will not. If something that appeared in the previous time is recognized as being self-established, and then now, that is, sometime later, it is recognized as not existing, then it will fall into nihilism, but merely admitting that something that existed in the previous time disappears in the second time will not. We will not fall into the eternalism and nihilism that depend on self-nature, because we do not think that things are self-existent. If you think that there is no eternalism, but there is nihilism, then if you previously admitted that something that will eventually be destroyed is self-existent, and then think that it does not exist, this is slandering the view that self-existence must always exist, so it will become nihilism. If you say that something that is self-established does not exist at all, then saying that it does not exist does not slander it, so it will not become nihilism. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "World Honored One, if someone previously took greed, hatred, and ignorance by borrowing, and then said that greed, hatred, and ignorance do not exist, then it becomes nothingness." Just like this. If you think that things are self-existent, even if you don't say it is permanent, it will become eternalism. If something that was self-existent in the previous time is thought to have disappeared in the second time, even if you don't admit that its continuation is cut off, it will become nihilism, so you should not think that things are self-established.

It does not go beyond the views of permanence and annihilation. If one does not accept that things are established by their own nature, although there is no view of permanence and annihilation dependent on their own nature, if there is no place to establish cause and effect, it will become slander, so it is a nihilistic view. It cannot be said that because one has not accepted the object of annihilation, it will not become a nihilistic view. Because even the worldly Lokayatas first accepted the causes of annihilation such as past and future lives and karmic results, and although they did not later say that they did not exist, they could not avoid becoming nihilistic views. Yogacharas think that only the other-powered mind and mental factors are established by their own characteristics, so they can abandon the view of non-existence, and because there is no completely imputed on the other-powered, they want to abandon the view of permanence. This is because they slander the apprehended and apprehender that depend on external objects, and falsely add to the other-powered that does not actually exist, so they will fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Only the view of the Madhyamikas does not fall into the extremes of existence and non-existence, and has the fault of being free from permanence and annihilation, but others do not. As it is said in the Ratnavali: 'If a person speaks of aggregates, the world, the Samkhyas, the owl-sons, etc., if the naked ones and others are destroyed, one asks the physician about existence and non-existence. Therefore, the teachings of the Buddhas, the immortal, beyond existence and non-existence, have shown the profound Dharma, know that it is the essence of the Dharma.' Here, speaking only of a person refers to one's own school speaking of a person as substantially existent. Speaking only of aggregates refers to one's own school in which a person is not considered substantially existent, but aggregates are considered substantially existent. In short, as long as one cannot establish karmic results and bondage and liberation, etc., on what does not have its own nature established by its own essence, then no matter how one abandons the view of permanence and annihilation, one cannot go beyond these two extremes, because when abandoning the view of annihilation, one must accept the extreme of existence, and when abandoning the view of permanence, one must accept the extreme of non-existence. Therefore, the view of Vijnanavada, which states that the formless has mind, and that the completely imputed is not established by its own characteristics, while the other two, the other-powered and the perfectly established, are established by their own characteristics, is like a person who is respected by many, and is the expedient of the Teacher, the Great Compassionate One, to gradually guide beings to realize the ultimate truth. It is the provisional meaning spoken to such disciples, not the definitive meaning.
