How could aging and death now exist without a cause? It cannot. It is said that the cause of aging and death is birth. As it is said: When a clod of earth is lifted, there is a cause for the lifting. Other than the cause of lifting, there is no other falling. As it is said, lifting itself is the cause of falling, and not something else. Similarly, birth itself is the cause of destruction, and not something else. If it is certain, then destruction is not without a cause. Because this destruction has the cause of birth, therefore arising itself is the cause of destruction. Therefore, all compounded dharmas arise with a cause. Whether it is birth or destruction, this is the nature of all phenomena. What is said can also be well quoted, which means that destruction in the second moment is the result of birth in the first moment. Secondly, it is also unreasonable for birth and aging-death to exist simultaneously by their own nature. If that were the case, one would die while being born, and cease while stopping, which is also unreasonable. Because they contradict each other like light and darkness, and it is not seen in the world that being born is the same as dying. Generally speaking, the actions of birth and cessation are not contradictory, and birth and cessation are not contradictory, but it is well known to all that being born and being ceased at the same time on the same basis is contradictory. If birth and cessation are established by their own characteristics, then, as previously stated, the cause of birth must exist at the time of being born. If that is the case, it will become the present, and it will also become ceasing. At that time, being born will increase, and being ceased will decrease, and these two are contradictory. Both birth and death will also become causeless, because two simultaneous things cannot be the cause of each other, and there is no death before birth, and no birth before death. Third, whether birth and so on have a sequence of before and after and simultaneous, or not, for the time being, birth and aging-death exist. It is unreasonable for those to be without a basis, so they belong to something. If you think it belongs to me, then first conduct reasoning and observe, which of birth and aging-death has a sequence of before and after and simultaneous?

Why do you rejoice, saying, "Birth is it, and death is it," for something that is impossible? Or, when these are not observed, why do the noble ones rejoice; they do not rejoice because they see things as they truly are. If birth and death inherently exist, then they would occur simultaneously with either the prior or the posterior, but since the order of prior, posterior, and simultaneous is not reasonable, birth and death do not inherently exist. If it does not exist, then abandon the assertion that "birth and death inherently exist, therefore the self of the agent of birth and death inherently exists." Secondly, not only is there no prior limit to samsara, that is, the birth and death of sentient beings alone, meaning there is no order of prior, posterior, and simultaneous. Moreover, it should be understood that there is no prior limit, and by implication, no posterior or simultaneous order, to cause and effect, characteristic and characterized, feeling and the feeler. That is, if the cause inherently exists prior, then the effect must also exist at that time, but since it does not, the cause becomes without a cause. If the effect is prior, it also becomes without a cause. If cause and effect exist simultaneously, then both become without a cause, as previously explained. If the characteristic is prior, there is nothing to characterize, and if the characterized is prior, there is no characteristic. If the characteristic and characterized inherently exist simultaneously, then they become established independently of each other. If the feeler is prior, whose feeler does it become? If the feeling is prior, it is unreasonable for there to be feeling without a feeler. If both are simultaneous, then they become established independently of each other and become without a cause. Through the explanation of samsara, not only should cause and effect be understood, but also it should be applied to all other meaningful entities, whether it be valid cognition and the object of valid cognition, or knowledge and the knowable, or what is to be proven and the means of proving, or parts and the whole, etc., that there are not the three, the prior limit, etc. Secondly, in this way, that birth, aging, and cause and effect, etc., do not inherently exist is also proven by profound scriptural statements, and that phenomena are not connected to prior and posterior limits, and that there is no death and transmigration, and no samsara.
