Refuting the priority of birth. Refuting the priority of aging and death. First, if the birth of a sentient being in samsara comes first, and aging and death come later, then at that time, that birth will be without aging and death, that is, without dying. If that is what you want, then that birth will become unconditioned, because it is free from aging and death, which are subject to change. If a sentient being is born and is free from death, it must be permanent, and therefore becomes unconditioned. Buddhagupta says that if there is no aging and death in birth, then there will be no basis for aging and death to occur later, and even if aging and death are encountered later, they will not do anything to birth, because it exists by its very nature without aging and death. If one thinks that birth comes first, then Devadatta, without dying in another lifetime, will also be born here first, so samsara will have a beginning and there will be the fault of having no cause. Furthermore, it will be unreasonable to remember previous births, saying that I appeared in the past, and there will be a new birth of sentient beings who did not appear before but are born later. If Devadatta did not die in the previous birth and was born here, what does that mean? If it means that Devadatta, who was born here, did not die in the previous birth, then, for example, a person who was born as a human in this life after transmigrating from the life of a god in the previous life, although he was born here without dying in the previous birth, just as samsara does not need to have a beginning, the same is true for Devadatta who was born in this life. If it is thought that the person who was born as a human in this life died in the previous life, then it is very unreasonable, because he did not exist in the previous life, and the one who died in the previous life was not the death of a god. If the one who was born in this life is the same one who died in the previous life, then the one who died here will be born later, so whichever realm dies, one must be born in that realm. If one says that if one sentient being named Devadatta did not die in the previous life and one sentient being was born here, then there will be a beginning, that is also unreasonable. Because this is the occasion to refute the priority of birth of the two, birth and death, with one Devadatta as the main subject, and not the occasion to examine which of the two, birth and death, comes first for each individual sentient being without taking one sentient being as the main subject. If you say that, then here the two separate streams of sentient beings

Previously, it seemed that I was born there and there, but because of the time of this life, I do not remember thinking that I was born there and there. Therefore, the self, which is the object of what is aimed at by the grace of this life and gives rise to the notion of "I," also exists in previous lives, so it is not contradictory to remember it that way. If the grace of this life existed in the previous life, it would not be the same as permanence. Similarly, in future lives as well, the person of this time will not go to the next life, but the object of the notion of "I," just a mere "I," will also follow there. Since one fears suffering in future lives and therefore abandons non-virtue here and strives for virtue here for the sake of happiness, it is also appropriate. For example, this person of today may not exist tomorrow, but fearing the suffering of hunger and thirst tomorrow, one saves food and drink from today. Fearing the suffering of old age, one saves wealth in youth. All of this is done not by distinguishing the self of this place and time separately, but generally desiring the self to attain happiness and be free from suffering. Even the mere self follows in those times, so it is not mistaken about the place. Therefore, the person who uses the term "I" and the self that is the basis of the imputation should not be taken as coextensive, but one should know that that person is a part of that self. These seem to be particularly important for general dependent origination and especially for the certainty of the arising of happiness and suffering as the result of white and black actions, so a brief mention is made. Here, from the commentary, just as mango trees and the like are seen to be born first even though aging and destruction have not preceded them, similarly, the self is spoken of as a person even though aging and death have not preceded it. Because they are born after their own seeds have ceased, so birth does not occur unless something else is destroyed, so it is the same as before. If the tree is different from the seed, so the birth of the tree occurs unless something else is destroyed, then? Because cause and effect are not identical, it is said to be comparable to the proof. If the continuum is the same, then if it is compared to the previous one, it will be the same as the self, otherwise it will be difficult to answer. The second is: if the birth of a sentient being is late and its aging and death are earlier than that, then birth will not be earlier.
