Where has it gone? Some wise ones seek. Searching in all directions and corners, just as its coming and going cannot be found. These aggregates, sources, and realms, are empty inside and empty outside. Everything is devoid of self and has no place to dwell. The nature of Dharma is the very essence of space. Such a nature of Dharma, you will realize when you see the lamp. Just as you yourself realize, so may beings, including gods and humans, realize. Perverted, unreal investigations, desire and hatred torment beings. From the clouds of compassion, descend the cool waters of peace. Guide the stream of nectar, pour it forth abundantly. Thus it is said. Among these, the first two verses use fire as an example to illustrate that if one examines fire, nothing at all can be found, and that it arises in dependence on causes and conditions and performs its function. Then, three verses show that both self and what belongs to self are empty of inherent existence, and combine both the example and the meaning. Then, one verse shows the example by emptiness itself. Then, two verses show that meaning by showing the previous realization, and then two verses show that one must show it to others in this way, and then two verses show the reason why it must be shown in this way, and then these two verses show the way to rain down the Dharma. Third, like this, taking fire and wood as examples, among self and what belongs to self, cause and effect, parts and wholes, etc., if one distinguishes between one and different, then, are these established as existing by their own nature, or are they established by the power of convention? After thinking like this, if one examines with the reasoning explained earlier, if it is like the former, then one will realize that there is no place to establish the terms such as what is to be burned and what can burn, and thus prevent the true clinging to them. If it is like the latter, then all these terms are very reasonable, and thus strengthen the certainty of dependent origination. Examining Fire and Wood, called the Essence of Sixteen Verses, the Analysis of the Tenth Ultimate. Second, to refute the contradiction of the proof of the person existing by nature, there are two: refuting the contradiction of the act of existing birth and death; refuting the contradiction of the act of existing dependent suffering.

First, there are three parts: explaining the tenets of the treatise, combining them with definitive statements, and summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first part is: Here it is said, the self (ātman) exists by its own nature because samsara exists. If there were no self (anātman), then in the cycle of the five realms, who would transmigrate from here to the next life, and from the previous life to this life, the essence of birth and death, passing from one to another? The Teacher (Buddha) also said that the cycle of birth, aging, and death has no beginning or end. Sentient beings, endowed with the obscuration of ignorance, possessing the attachment of craving, bound by the continuity of craving, the beginning of those who wander and transmigrate is invisible. Thus, samsara is explained through the continuous cycle of birth and death. If this is the case, then the one who transmigrates also exists, and that is the self (ātman). To analyze this, there are two parts: refuting the view that samsara exists by its own nature, and applying that reasoning to other aspects as well. The first part is further divided into two parts: refuting that samsara has three parts—beginning, middle, and end—and refuting the temporal precedence and simultaneity of birth and death. The first part is: If samsara existed by its own nature, then like a pot and other things, it would also have a beginning and an end. However, samsara has no beginning or end, as it is said in the scriptures that the cycle of birth, aging, and death has no beginning or end. The teachers of other schools, such as the Perfectionists, asked the Able One (Buddha) whether the beginning of this samsara was visible or not. If they said it was visible, then they would refute the claim that samsara has no creator and arises without cause. If they said it was invisible, then they would be admitting that their claim of being all-knowing was false. After discussion, they asked, 'Hey, Gautama, is the beginning of samsara visible?' At that time, the Great Able One (Buddha) replied, 'The beginning of samsara is not visible.' Therefore, since the scriptures say that samsara has no beginning or end, samsara does not exist by its own nature. Therefore, since the beginning and end cannot be determined, samsara does not exist by its own nature, just like a rotating firebrand wheel. If it is said that the scriptures state that samsara has no beginning or end, it is only to indicate that there is no initial boundary of 'beginning from here' and no final boundary of 'not arising from here.'
