Then, there are three refutations to this: refuting dependence by examining the three times, refuting dependence by examining the absence of a basis for dependence, and refuting both dependence and non-dependence. The first has two parts: refuting dependence on prior and subsequent times, and refuting dependence on simultaneous times. The first is: if it is said that "this fire is the burner of this wood," thus establishing fire in dependence on wood; if it is said that "wood is what is burned by this fire," thus establishing wood in dependence on fire. Then, depending on what do the two, fire and wood, come to be, and what is the first established basis of dependence? If it is thought that wood is established first, and fire comes to be in dependence on that, that is unreasonable. Because what is not being burned is not wood, otherwise all grass and so on would become wood. Saying it this way means that if wood is established by its own nature, it must encounter fire, not that it is merely wood now, because many actions of prior and subsequent times can be established in conventional terms. If fire is established first, and wood is thought to be in dependence on that, that is also unreasonable, because there is no fire established before wood. If there were, it would become causeless, and there would be no need to depend on wood later. If it is said that wood is established first, and fire is established in dependence on that, then it is not reasonable to depend on fire that is not established, so it is necessary to depend on what exists. In that case, fire is already established, and it needs to be established again, so there is no need to depend on it again. Furthermore, if fire is established in dependence on wood being established first, then it is the same for wood to be burned, if wood can be established without fire, that is unreasonable. Verses from Buddhabalita: "By the first question, what is established first, if it is said that wood needs wood," these two lines say that if wood is established first, it needs to depend on wood; "if it is said that fire is established first, then it becomes something to be burned," these two lines say that if fire is established first. Because if the two that are the basis of dependence do not exist, dependence is unreasonable, so they must exist, and if they exist before and after, fire can be established without wood, so there is no need to depend on wood, and wood can be established without fire, so there is no need to depend on fire, this is how it is explained. What is refuted here is the existence of dependence by its own nature, and this does not go beyond the two, prior and subsequent times and simultaneous times, showing pervasiveness, and when refuting prior and subsequent times, on the prior
