I also use "view of self" etc. to indicate. If I am completely examined, then I am not before the view etc., because it will become without the cause of being nominally established as a person. Now, that is, simultaneously with the view etc., it is also empty of self-nature, because there is no self-nature established separately, and no coexisting self-nature has been seen. If each self-nature is established, then the self and the near-acquisition will become mutually independent, so it is unreasonable for each to be established. There is also no seeing etc. before and the self after, because without the author, karma cannot be established. When it is like this, the conceptual thoughts that "self-nature exists" for that self will be eliminated. Because seeing etc. makes it clear, the conceptual thoughts that "that person does not exist" will also be eliminated. Second, like this, it is determined that person, the near-acquirer and what is to be taken are not self-existent, which is established by profound teachings. In order to explain that all the scriptures that are taught like this are taught by this treatise, it is in accordance with the definitive meaning sutra. The discussion of examining the beginning of birth is discussed in conjunction with the teachings, and it should be understood as such. Third, for "the taker of this body is this person" and "what this person takes are these dharmas", if one clings to the reality that is not established by the power of nominal terms, but by self-nature, then one should contemplate the reason why it is extremely reasonable for the arising of interdependence of mere names to arise with the certainty that there is no name for the taker and what is to be taken. Examining what existed before, called the nature of the twelfth verse, is the explanation of the ninth chapter. Second, refuting the proof of the self-existence of a person is divided into two: Refuting the example of the proof, refuting the reason for the proof. The first is divided into three: the doctrine of the treatise, in accordance with the definitive meaning sutra, summarizing the meaning and showing the name. First, here it is said: Near-acquisition and near-acquirer depend on each other, and are not established by self-nature. It is unreasonable to say this, because things have dependence and self-nature is established.

It is for the sake of seeing. Like this, although fire arises in dependence on firewood, it is because of seeing the nature of heat and the fruit of burning; although firewood exists in dependence on fire, it is because it is the nature of the four great elements of combustible matter. Therefore, like fire and firewood, both the taker and the taken are established by their own nature. There are three refutations to this: refuting that fire and firewood exist by their own nature; applying this reasoning to other things as well; and criticizing the view for the sake of refutation. The first part has three: refuting with reasons not previously stated; refuting with reasons previously stated; and concluding these points. The first part has two: refuting that the nature is one; and refuting that the nature is different. The first part is: If fire and wood both exist by their own nature, then they must necessarily be either one in nature or different. If one and different are distinguished, then the other must be completely excluded, because it contradicts the three aggregates. The combustible is wood and so on, which has become the object, and the burner is fire. In this case, if the wood and the fire are one in nature, then the agent and the actions will become one. Just as a potter and a pot, or something to be cut and a cutter, are not seen as the same thing, nor is it admitted, so it is unreasonable. This ash, with the reason that it is the action and the agent on the opposite side, infers that fire and wood are not one in nature. The second part has two: refuting the thesis that the nature is different; refuting the proof that the nature is different. The first part has two: if the nature is different, it does not depend on wood; if the nature is different, it will not meet with wood. The first part has two: the actual refutation; and eliminating the uncertainty. The first part has two: it arises without wood; and it becomes constantly burning, etc. The first part is: If fire is different in nature from wood, then fire will arise without depending on firewood, just as cloth that is different from a pot is seen without depending on the pot. This is because something that is different in nature should not depend on it, and if it does not depend on it, it is the same as not depending on it, just as cloth without a pot can be seen, but fire without wood cannot.
