Therefore, if one seeks the basis to which the term 'I' or 'person' applies, other than being merely a designation, one cannot find anything that is either inherently different from or the same as the aggregates. Thus, it is merely designated as 'I' and 'mine' in dependence on the aggregates. When a hand is in pain or heals, one says that the person is in pain or has healed, and also says, 'My hand is in pain or has healed.' Therefore, isn't it the case that the same hand is designated as both 'I' and 'mine'? If one thinks this way, it is because one does not understand the meaning of worldly language. Its meaning is that when a hand is in pain or heals, it is designated that 'I' am in pain or have healed, but not that the hand is designated as 'I,' because one does not conceive of the hand as 'I.' When Given-by-the-Gods does not distinguish between the earlier and later selves, the 'I' that is the object of clinging to as 'I' is merely the 'I' that has been present since beginningless time. Therefore, the various beings' 'I's when taking bodies such as those of gods are merely differentiations of the former. When Given-by-the-Gods distinguishes between the 'I's of each rebirth, the 'I' that is grasped as 'I' is merely a partial 'I' of each lifetime. Just as with the 'I' of a place, one should understand that the grasping of 'I' with respect to that which has a place also has ways of grasping that distinguish and do not distinguish. If one seeks such an 'I' that is not merely a designation, but the meaning of the designation, one cannot find it anywhere. If one says that therefore it is not possible to accumulate karma and experience its results, then if one seeks the meaning of form and so on that is not merely a designation, just like the 'I,' one cannot find anything that is either inherently different from or the same as its parts, and therefore it would be impossible to accomplish anything. When one searches in this way, the 'I' and the imputed existent are both the same in that they cannot be found, but the two 'I's are not the same in terms of being refuted and not being refuted, because the real existent can withstand rational analysis, while the imputed existent cannot. Second, even if the 'I' is refuted in this way, nevertheless, seeing and so on are inherently existent, because they have not been refuted. If these exist, since there is no connection between seeing and so on and things like a pot that are not of the nature of 'I,' then with what is the 'I' that is related to these inherently existent? If seeing and hearing and so on, as well as feeling and so on, are also the intelli-

When it is shown that I, the one who answers, does not exist by its own nature, not only that, but also views and so on are not inherently existent, isn't that clearly shown? Therefore, views and so on are things to be taken, and because there is no self-nature, the self of the taker is also without self-nature. Third: Here, the opponent thinks that the person who does not exist by nature is refuted, which is not merely a refutation, but is established as a non-affirmative negation, so he asks: Are you sure that there is no self? Who said that? Didn't you immediately retort that since views and so on do not exist, I also do not exist? Although it was said that way, the meaning here is not as you understand it, we do not agree. Like this, you think that I am inherently existent, and I, in order to counter your clinging, say that I am not inherently existent, this is merely a word of refutation, merely refuting the object to be refuted, other than that, the self-nature of this I does not exist, it is not inferred by reason, because both clinging to real and unreal must be abandoned. Such kinds of reasoning are to distinguish between affirmative and non-affirmative negation, and it is not a characteristic of the consequentialist, because it has been explained many times before. Therefore, regarding the person, as it is said in the Hundred Treatises: What is your self, my self is not. Therefore, it is not me, because it is uncertain. For impermanent things, wouldn't conceptual thoughts arise? It should be understood like this. Its meaning is, if I exist by my own nature, then just as one person thinks that it is mine, everyone must also think that it is mine, but in fact, that self in which you generate self-grasping, I do not generate self-grasping. Therefore, this reason shows that I am not inherently established, because not everyone will necessarily generate self-grasping. If I do not exist, then what will this self-grasping become? Apart from the impermanent aggregates, there is no other object of self-grasping, and the aggregates themselves are not suitable as the object of self-grasping, therefore, it is only the conceptual thought of "I" that grasps the self that is imputed in dependence on the impermanent aggregates. Like this, I do not exist by my own nature, but it is not the reason that I do not exist merely by relying on imputation, this
