It means to collect all three of seeing, hearing, and feeling, as well as the unspoken faculties and the remaining mental events. Also, to believe that the remaining collected things also belong here. The word "empowered" means that the first two verses are empowered, collecting all faculties and mental events, so it has the meaning of including them. This is what is said in the Lamp of Wisdom and its commentary. The five schools of the Sthavira Nikāya, the Vātsīputrīyas, the Dharmaguptakas, the Sarvāstivādins, the Mahāsāṃghikas, and the Theravādins, assert that the person exists as a substance, as stated in the Blaze of Reasoning. The second (refutation of the truly existent person) has three parts: refuting the truly existent taker; thereby showing that the taken is also truly empty; dispelling disputes about the taker being truly non-existent. The first (refuting the truly existent taker) has two parts: refuting the self posited by others; the way to establish a person in one's own conventional terms. The first (refuting the self posited by others) has three parts: refuting the taker existing before all that is taken; refuting the existence before each of the taken; refuting the proof of existence before all that is taken. The first (refuting the taker existing before all that is taken) has two parts: refuting because there is no cause to posit the taker before the taken; refuting because the taker has no basis for existing before the taken. The first (refuting because there is no cause to posit the taker before the taken) is: if the taker exists by nature, then it does not go beyond the three cases of being before, after, and simultaneous with the taken, and the latter two are refuted below, so here the refutation of being before the taken is: the object, the person, that exists before seeing, hearing, etc., and feeling, etc., because there is no cause to posit it, it will be impossible to establish the general person and the specific seer, etc. In this way, the cause for positing the name of a person is seeing, etc., if the person is before those, then, like a pot or cloth, it will become independent of seeing, etc. If something does not depend on its own cause, then it is causeless, just as a rich person who does not depend on wealth, etc., does not exist. Here, it is not said that if there is a temporal sequence, then the former should not depend on the latter, because one's own system also admits that all causes and effects are mutually dependent. Therefore, establishing a person as a seer, etc., is pervaded by dependence on seeing, etc., and the taker sees.

If dependence is established by its own nature, then it must always depend. Because at the time of the receiver, there is no object of dependence such as seeing, etc., therefore, since it does not depend on it, dependence in general can also be refuted. The second case is: if it is thought that even without seeing, etc., that is, the person who exists before them will accept seeing, etc. Then there is another fault, that is, just as Leshin existed independently of wealth before being related to wealth, and accumulated other wealth. For the receiver, even without that person, that is, seeing, etc. are unrelated to it, there is no doubt that it will exist alone. But this is unacceptable, because this person is the receiver of the eyes, etc., seeing, etc. is what is accepted by the receiver, what is the nature of the receiver, it will appear, present and recognize. The eyes, etc. are what is accepted by this person. What is the nature of the receiver, it will show that seeing, etc. is what is accepted by the receiver. At that time, if there is nothing accepted by the receiver, where will the receiver be? No. If there is no receiver, where will there be something accepted by the receiver? No. So these two are established by mutual dependence. When there is no receiver and it is admitted that seeing, etc. exist alone, because there is no basis for the eyes, etc., there is no seeing, etc. This is like what was said before, if the self-nature is different, then the reason why it cannot depend. In Buddhapalita's commentary, the answer to "What is it designated by?" is "Even without seeing, etc., it is completely established by itself." When the meaning of the two words "seeing, etc." is said, then even without that person, seeing, etc. will be completely established by itself, there is no doubt about this. If so, what is the fault? In answering this question, the two words "by what" are used to indicate that these two are mutually manifested, therefore, if there is no one, the other will not exist, which is explained by the latter two words. Because they do not have the cause of designating the receiver and the basis for the existence of the receiver, it is impossible for the receiver to exist independently of seeing, etc.
