The meaning is that, due to the reason of mutual dependence, for all things that can be done and are done, and their names, it is the occasion to prevent them from existing by their own nature. Therefore, fire is also established by relying on it being the cause of producing smoke, and it is not established independently by its own nature. Therefore, it is different from what other schools say, such as fire that does not depend on smoke. All distinctions must be understood in this way, because they must be established by mutual dependence. Therefore, they do not have the autonomy to exist by the power of their own nature, so the lack of self-nature can be established by the very reason of dependent origination. In this way, by relying solely on drawing out the certainty of cause and effect, all targets that cling to characteristics can be destroyed. Therefore, from there, all the extremes of wrong views, such as permanence and annihilation, and exaggeration and denigration, can be cut off. If the meaning of such emptiness of self-nature is not understood as the meaning of dependent origination, either one is confused by the remnants of the targets of the five kinds of clinging to reality, or one does not accept the self-school of dependent origination that this result arises from this cause, then one cannot truly establish the definite understanding of dependent origination, and one can only fall into either the extreme of permanence or annihilation. If it is said: If one knows the remaining things, one can understand the meaning of what should be taken and what can be taken. Then, there is no need to write "Similarly, one should know the near-taking." Although this is true, in order to know that these two are the most important in analysis, they are listed separately, and in the later chapters, the examination of these two will mostly appear. Secondly, in this way, all things that can be done and are done, such as virtuous and non-virtuous actions and their agents, are shown to be empty of self-nature by reason, which is in accordance with the definitive meaning scriptures. And, in order to show that this chapter will explain all the statements that cannot determine what can be done and what is done, only a slight mention is made of the aspect of combining with the definitive meaning scriptures. In the Sutra Requested by Upali it says: I have shown the terror of the hells, although I have made thousands of beings disgusted, but those terrible beings who die and fall into the evil realms have never existed. Those who take out swords, great arrows, and weapons to harm do not exist either, and due to the power of conceptual thought, in those evil realms, they see bodies falling upon them.

Here there are no weapons. Various pleasing flowers bloom. A golden palace shines, delightful to the mind. Here, there is no action for that either. These are all established by the power of conceptualization. Through the power of conceptualization, the world is differentiated. By clinging to perception, children are distinguished. Clinging and non-clinging, these also do not arise. Complete conceptualization is like illusion and mirage. Thus it is said that actions that lead to lower realms and cause harm, and actions that create the realm of the gods, are empty of inherent existence, and these are established by the power of conceptualization in name only. Thirdly, if actions and agents are merely established as existing by the power of conceptualization, and not as if they are grasped as existing by their own nature, then neither the agent nor the action is reasonable, and it must be realized that these two are merely established in mutual dependence. The chapter called "Examination of the Agent and the Action" is the nature of twelve verses, and is the explanation of the eighth chapter. Secondly, explaining the selflessness of the person, there are two parts: refuting the inherent existence of the person; refuting the proofs for the inherent existence of the person. The first part has three sections: explaining the main text of the refutation; combining it with definitive scriptures; summarizing the meaning and indicating the title. The first part has two sections: stating the previous position; refuting that position. The first is: Here, the near-taking should be understood as such, for the sake of clarifying action and agent. Saying this is unreasonable, because in this way, seeing and hearing, etc., and feeling, etc., are the near-taking of what, the near-taker should exist before those near-takings, as some, that is, those respected by many of the Sravaka school, say, the reason is like the benefactor existing before the wealth, therefore the wealth is not the son of Sog's Mosha. If the thing, that is, the person, does not exist beforehand, then how can seeing, etc., be taken near by the person, it cannot. Therefore, before seeing, etc., the thing, that is, this person who takes near, exists, so it is asserted. The former "etc." includes the remaining four faculties, and the latter "etc." includes mental factors such as contact and attention. The word "and" is what is said.
