And learn to perceive appearances as being like illusions and dreams in their essence. The chapter called "Examining Arising, Abiding, and Ceasing" is the essence of thirty-two verses, and is the detailed explanation of the seventh chapter. Third, refuting the existence of cause, action, and agent, in three parts: explaining the root text of the treatise; combining it with definitive scriptures; summarizing the points and indicating the name. The first part says this: consciousness and other conditioned dharmas exist by their own nature, because there is their cause, action, and the agent of that action. The Teacher also said that the individual, the person associated with ignorance, also accumulates merit, and also accumulates non-merit and immovable actions. And so on, also closely showing the agent of action, its action and result, as well as consciousness and so on. Refuting this is in three parts: refuting that action and agent are established by their own nature; the way to establish action and agent in conventional terms; applying that reasoning to other things as well. The first part is in two parts: refuting that compatible actions and agents are established by their own nature; refuting that incompatible actions and agents are established by their own nature. The first part is in two parts: refuting the actions and agents of the first two cases; refuting the actions and agents of the third case. The first part is in two parts: establishing the proposition; showing the proof. The first part is: because this one does, therefore it is the agent, only doing a little something is called the agent, not doing is not. And that which does, either has become the agent, or has not become the agent, or depends on different bases to become or not become the agent, there is such a distinction, there are a total of three cases. Because this is done, therefore it is the action, that is, becoming the excellent thing desired by the agent. There are also three cases: becoming the action, not becoming the action, and depending on different bases to become either is or is not the action. Among them, the one who has become the agent, possessing the action, that becomes the action, that is, possessing the action does not do, this is the first proposition. The one who has not become the agent, being separated from the action, also has not become the action, that is, being separated from the action does not do, this is the second proposition. The second part is in two parts: the proof of the first proposition; the proo

It is so. The first has two parts: refuting by asserting that there is action that has not been done by anyone is too extreme, and refuting by asserting that there is a doer who does nothing is too extreme. The first is that a doer is established by the reason of doing something, so only someone who has doing is entitled to the name of doer. Thus, someone who has become a doer by having doing, then there is no other doing by which that action will become the action of doing it. When there is no other action, the action that the doer does not do will also become an action that does not depend on the doer. However, an action without a doer is impossible, just like a son of a barren woman making a vase. Thus, when refuting the extreme, the reason that an action without a doer is impossible establishes that the doer is the one who has become the doer, but the action that is done by him does not exist inherently, thus establishing the first proposition. If it is said that the action of making a clay vase is what establishes the potter as the doer of the vase, and that the action of making a clay vase has not been done? The reason for doing the action of making a clay vase is that the potter is first established as the doer of the vase. After that, it is necessary to do an action that is not that action, but since there is no other action, the action of making a clay vase will become an action that has not been done by the doer? How is this objection reasonable? The answer is that because he is the doer, he does the action, and also by doing one thing, he is also established as the doer and the one who has done that action, which is what we ourselves want in name. For example, Devadatta is accumulating merit by prostrating, which means that Devadatta is the doer of that action, and the action of prostrating is said to be the accumulation of merit, so it is an action. It is said that he is accumulating, so he is doing something that has become an action. If that is the case, if we say that the doer and the action exist inherently, then by doing one thing as an action, we cannot simultaneously establish both the doer and the one who has done the action, so that objection applies. Thus, the action of the craftsman depends on both the potter and the clay, and if those two bases are established separately by their own characteristics, then the action must also be divided and exist separately, so it is contradictory to rely on one thing in common, as has been said before. Therefore, the action of making various establishments in the doer is not that.
