Since the action depends on both the path being walked and the person, that action also becomes the meaning of both the words "stepping" and "walking," so it is not contradictory to say that there is only one action. However, it is contradictory for the path and the walker to each exist in their own right and to rely on one common dharma. As it is said: Those that are separate by their own nature, it is not reasonable for them to belong to one continuum. Therefore, the action of moving the foot is both the meaning of "the path being walked" and the meaning of the word "walking." The action of walking is only one, and these two are contradictory, so if one word has meaning, the other must be empty of meaning. The second case is: If the action of walking is also present in the meaning of both the words "stepping" and "walking," then the action of walking would become two. One is by which action of walking does the path gain the name "stepping"; the other is by which person's walking is the action of walking two. If there are two actions of walking, what fault is there? If the action of walking becomes two, then the walker will also become two, and this is the fault. The reason for this is that without the dependent walker, the dependent action of walking is not reasonable. Action, whether it is karma or the agent, needs to rely on its own accomplisher, and this action of walking also exists in the agent. Here, because there are two actions of walking, the way in which the walker becomes two is: When Deva-datta (Lhasbyin) puts down his right foot, there must be two actions of putting down the foot at the same time, relying on the path and the agent, for the reasons stated earlier. At that time, there must also be two right feet, and it is the same when lifting the left foot. Thus, if one Deva-datta with two feet is walking, there would also be two Deva-dattas, but in reality there are not, so there would not be two actions either. Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that stepping inherently has the action of walking. If one Deva-datta is sitting and also speaking and looking at the same time, at that time, one agent
