If it were established as conventionally existent, it would be a great accusation of doctrinal error. This concludes the explanation of the first chapter of the treatise called "Examination of Conditions," which consists of fourteen verses. Second, there are three aspects to refuting the inherent existence of the individual based on the act of going and coming: explaining the root text of the treatise; combining it with definitive scriptures; and summarizing the meaning and indicating the title. First: Here it is said that even though it has been explained that the cessation of arising, etc., is established by negating birth, it is necessary to state a unique reason for negating it in order to establish that there is no going or coming in dependent origination. Here, the negation of going and coming is explained as negating the inherent going and coming of the object of uncontaminated wisdom. Also, in the commentary on the eighth chapter, it is said that the goer and the act of going are established in dependence on each other, but are not inherently existent, so the inherently existent going and coming should be negated. There are two aspects to negating this: explaining in detail; and concluding. There are two aspects to the first: separately negating the action in relation to the act and the agent; and commonly negating the action in relation to the act and the agent. There are four aspects to the first: negating based on the act; negating based on the agent; negating the proof of the existence of action; and negating based on the action. There are two aspects to the first: commonly negating the action on the three paths; and specifically negating the action on stepping (bgo mpa). First: If the action of going inherently exists, it must exist on one of the three paths, but that is not reasonable. Because one does not go on the path that has already been traversed, i.e., there is no action of going, because the action of going is present. The nature of the path, the action of going has ceased, because it is past. For the time being, this is showing the order of negation. One also does not go on the path that has not yet been traversed, because what has not yet been traversed is that the action of going has not yet arisen, and the action of going is present. There is also no inherently existent action of going on stepping (bgo mpa), because the place previously traversed by the goer is what has been traversed, and the place not yet traversed is what has not been traversed, and apart from these two, i.e., the path being stepped upon, which is neither of these two, the valid cognizer cannot know as the subject of truth. If the side stepped on by the foot that is going is the stepping, then that is the action of going that has ceased.
