It mainly elucidates by focusing on the aspect of negation. The reason for doing so is that the notion that cause and effect exist by virtue of their own nature is deeply ingrained from beginningless time and difficult to reverse; if self-nature is negated, then the relationship of action and agent can be easily established for that which is without self-nature. For our own system, the ways of establishing action and agent in conventional terms are not mainly elucidated. In this way, on the aspect of negation, by examining how the meaning of the imputed, which is labeled by "from self" or "from other," exists, only negation arises. Therefore, it is very clear that what is negated is not merely the imputed arising, but not the arising itself. Considering this, most treatises do not add distinctions to the object of negation. Even when distinctions are added, it is mentioned many times that if it is added in one instance, since the reasons are the same, it should be understood that it is easy to add to those that are not explicitly added, and this is also out of this consideration. In the Clear Words, "no cessation, no arising," etc., are to show that they do not contradict the scriptures that speak of the existence of cessation, etc. Therefore, it is said that the nature of the object of stainless wisdom does not have arising and ceasing, etc., and it has already been explained in emptiness that the arising of ultimate truth is negated, but not the arising of conventional truth. Furthermore, it is explained that the intention of the scriptures that say that things arise from the four conditions is also the same. It is also said that the negation of the objective condition is also in the ultimate truth, but not in the conventional truth. Therefore, it is very clear that distinctions are added to the object of negation, and the number is also large. Therefore, when explaining the meaning of the words, do not be confused because it does not appear much. In the commentary on the Hundred Treatises, it is also said: If this analytical examination negates all forms of arising, thereby wanting to show that there is no arising of conditioned phenomena, then in that case, it will not be like an illusion, but will be measured like the son of a barren woman, etc. Fearing falling into the absence of dependent origination, it will not conform to those, but will conform to illusions, etc., which are not contradictory to that. It is said very clearly. In the Lankavatara Sutra, it is also said: Considering the unborn by nature, I said that all dharmas are unborn. This sentence is quoted in the Clear Words. If it is established by its own characteristics, then cause and effect are negated, then cause and effect are merely nominal establishments.

It becomes merely established by the power of designation, just as Buddhapālita says at the beginning of the first chapter that birth is merely a designation, and at the end that birth is established as merely a designation. Thus, if one sees that cause and effect cannot be accepted as established by their own nature, then no one can deny the cause and effect that are beneficial and harmful, because they exist; but for those that exist by their own nature, they cannot be established, therefore one should accept that only the establishment by the power of designation is valid. Because one is too accustomed to establishing the produced and the producer on the basis of their own characteristics, when that is refuted, it is uncomfortable to establish them merely by the power of designation. But there are only two ways of establishing, and if the former is not reasonable, then one should direct one's mind towards the latter as being reasonable. If the produced and the producer exist, then the meaning of cause and effect exists, so thinking that it is not reasonable to say that it is merely a name is also not reasonable, because the sound of mere reason does not cut off the existence of the meaning that is not a name, and the meaning is established by valid cognition; and by saying that it exists merely as a name, although there is no existence that is not established by the power of designation, it has already been said that not everything that is established by the power of designation is shown to exist. Thus, for external and internal causes and conditions, such as seeds and sprouts, and the arising of consciousness depending on the senses and objects, taking whatever appears clearly as a basis, and observing how the grasping, as previously explained, grasps, then from either the side of the effect or the side of the cause, completely negate the nature of all the reasonings that negate existence by their own nature, and even if it is not negated even slightly, one will be bound by its grasping and will not be allowed to be liberated. Then, those causes and effects appear merely as designated names, and for the causes and effects that are beneficial and harmful, there is no place to deny, so the cause of merely a designation produces the fruit. I am certain that grasping those that are established only by their own characteristics is perverse, and one should not harm the certainty of cause and effect and dependent origination, because in one's own system, for those places where they are not established as cause and effect, merely in the aspect of existence
