To mention briefly: As stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra, "A young Bodhisattva Mahasattva, skilled in the wisdom of the essence of all dharmas being without inherent existence, does not become attached, hateful, or deluded towards form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and all dharmas. Why is that? Because they do not truly observe these dharmas, nor do they fixate on them. What is attachment, to what is attachment, with what is attachment; what is hatred, to what is hatred, with what is hatred; what is delusion, to what is delusion, with what is delusion. They do not truly observe nor fixate on these dharmas. If they do not truly observe dharmas, nor fixate on them, then they become unattached to all three realms, quickly attain this samadhi, and quickly realize the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment." Thus it is proclaimed. Thirdly: Thus, if there is a way of clinging that clings to what is attachment, to what is attached, with what is attached, and so on, the three dharmas of the category of all afflictions, and to what is faith, to what is believed, with what is believed, and so on, the three dharmas of the category of purification, as being established by their own nature, then one should determine that, as it has been established by reason, none of their designations can be established. After that, their designations must be acknowledged, but since there is no basis for establishment by their own nature, then it is only on emptiness of inherent existence that their arrangements are most reasonable. Thus, one should be led to the certainty of dependent arising, such as, "Attachment depends on desire," and so on, acknowledging this translated statement. "An Examination of Desire and Attachment," which is the essence of ten verses, is the commentary on the sixth chapter. Secondly, refuting the characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing, in three parts: explaining the text of the treatise; combining it with definitive meaning scriptures; and summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first has two parts: stating the previous position; and refuting it. The first is: Here it is stated that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, which are conditioned phenomena, exist by their own nature, because the characteristics of these conditioned phenomena, such as arising, exist. The Teacher also said, "O monks..."

This is The characteristic of conditioned phenomena, that is, conditioned phenomena manifest as arising, manifest as ceasing, manifest as abiding, and manifest as changing. It is said thus. In the Dharma Abhidhamma, based on the fact that arising, aging, abiding, and ceasing are said to be non-associated formations, most of the upper and lower schools of our own tradition consider them to be non-associated formations. Therefore, the arising, ceasing, and abiding of form, mind, and mental factors are also considered to be non-associated. And this, the Sutra School and above consider to be nominally existent, while the Sarvastivadins consider it to be substantially existent. By what kind of characteristics such as arising, form and so on are said to be conditioned phenomena, the characteristics such as arising are also considered by the Sutra School and above to be the function of arising, the function of ceasing, and the function of abiding of those dharmas. And the Sarvastivadins, as will be explained later, consider them to be the agents that cause the arising of form and so on, the agents of ceasing, and the agents of abiding. According to the later views, when one such as the form aggregate is represented as a conditioned phenomenon, it cannot be represented because it is arising and so on, but it can be represented as a conditioned phenomenon because there are other meanings such as self-arising agent. According to the former views, it is not represented in this way. When the Sutra School prohibits other entities other than the arising and so on of form and so on, the Sarvastivadins question, how can the dharma that is the basis of the characteristic itself be its characteristic? The answer is: just as the aggregation of grains and so on and the hardness of cattle and the earth element, although they are not other entities, are characteristics, so too are arising and so on similar to them, as explained in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge.
