It will not become earth, nor will it become anything else that is not desire. Therefore, even if there is attachment, desire should not be reasoned, just as the two words "attachment" are also quoted in the Lamp of Wisdom. Attachment is similar to the negation of desire that existed or did not exist previously, but the way the upper and lower treatises negate is different. The difference is whether the first part of the two words "attachment" emits a negative word or not. The second point is: if attachment negates the desire that existed or did not exist previously, then attachment is self-existent because it has not been negated. If attachment is self-existent, then desire will not exceed the two cases of existing or not existing previously. Not only for desire, but also for attachment, desire also exists or does not exist previously, because for desire, the order of examining and negating whether attachment exists or does not exist previously is the same, so attachment is not self-existent. The similarity is that if it is thought that desire existed previously and attachment existed later, then: If before attachment, there is desire without attachment, relying on it there is attachment, if there is desire there is attachment. Combining these to refute, it will become that before attachment there is desire without a basis. If it is thought that desire did not exist previously but there is attachment, then the co-emergent will be negated below, it is thought that attachment is in front and desire is behind, if so, even if there is no desire, how can there be attachment? Combining these, if attachment is in front, then even an Arhat will have attachment. In response to this, Buddhapalita issued the fourth sentence as a reason as shown by the third sentence of the first verse, if desire is in front, then desire will be attached to this, if there is no desire, then what will be attached to it? Even if desire has not made it attached, but if it is attached, there will be nothing that is not attached, so if there is no desire, attachment is unreasonable. In response to "if there is desire there is attachment": Even if there is desire, how can there be attachment? It is proposed that if attachment exists later, then desire has not made it attached, so even if there is desire, attachment is unreasonable. The two words are also quoted in the Lamp of Wisdom. Therefore, it is an old translation.
